I have a 1969 GTX with wood grain dash and wood grain door panels, and I would like to know what steering wheel came with the car. It was an automatic, now a 4 speed

Thanks, Mark

The only thing I have is the plate that is on the inner fender top...Broadcast sheet is long gone.

The car is not a numbers matching, however what would be the steering wheel that you all would want?

I do like the deluxe steering wheel...looks nice. I was told that my car was a optioned out deluxe model. It did have a control for the hood air, but all is left is the pull lever for fresh hood air for the engine. 440 car as well.

Put in the one you like best. The good news for 69 air grabber's is that you can bolt in the parts you need in your existing hood.

Mark,

The standard wheel for the GTX looks good, few had the Deluxe wheel which is the same wheel with a full horn ring, and many had the Sport Wheel (known by many as the wood wheel).

It also depends on the color of your interior. Colored interiors sometimes had a wheel that matched the color of the interior.

Either way the Standard wheel for the GTX or the Sport wheel both look great.

I like that my own GTX, a 70 with quite a few options, has the Standard wheel.

Thanks Morty,

My interior is all Black with woodgrain center door panels and woodgrain center dash panel.

I like the deluxe wheel and the woodgrained sport wheel, but the Black deluxe wheel might look better? just trying to decide on what would look better...

for the '69 GTX:
~ 74.6% STANDARD Steering Wheel w/partial horn-ring (color keyed to the interior)
~ 2.8% OPTIONAL S78 FULL horn-ring (color keyed to the interior) $5.45
~ 22.6% OPTIONAL S81 Sport steering wheel (wood-grained) $26.75

Mark,

All 69 GTXs had the same style door panels with woodgrain. It's a fantastic looking interior in my opinion.

You can't go wrong with either wheel. cool

Thank you for the pictures guys...it really helps me to make a decision!

The wheel that I have now is that small tuff wheel look-a-like from Grant, and it is just too small for manual steering, and looks misplaced.

6bbl's post is about what I thought as far as most common steering wheel. Back in the day, the woodgrain wheel wasn't all that common; most cars I saw had whatever was standard.
If you're going to drive the car a lot, the woodgrain wears off, where the standard types don't have that issue.

I have had several 69 GTX's and RR
I always liked the wood wheel.

My pet peeve on the 69 GTX interior is when guys re-do the door panels and they leave off the red/white/blue emblem.
I think those really make the door.

Hi Matt,

I looked for an emblem for that year, and could not find one...do you have a picture of it and the placement?

Thank you, Mark

Hi Sixty9redgtx,

I just bought a mint steering wheel like yours on ebay earlier this week, and am now looking to buy the horn contact switch and padded horn center like yours. My car has the black interior, so went with black.

BTW, your GTX’s interior looks great!

here's the same steering wheel in a '69 Road Runner coupe w/M6T interior scope
RM21 * 1.5% OPTIONAL S78 FULL horn-ring (color keyed to the interior)

rarer installation rate, but since twice as many RR coupes were built than GTXs - more common & easier to locate
