Hi all,

Does anyone know what this thing is that's bolted to the front of my timing chain cover? This cover was included with a used 440 block I bought. The block came out of a motor home; is it something specific to motor homes or industrial engines? Thanks for any info.

Roger

Gun sight. It is hard to see the timing marks in a motor home so the factory put that on there to help line things up for the mechanic. Not sure if it helped or hurt.

it almost looks hand fabbed, so the timing can be read with the "pointer" that alot of of tune up machines have for later model engines.

I thought the same thing, it looks like the tube you would place the magnetic timing probe that was on some of the old Sun Analyzers.

Yep, mag pickup because in some chassis, seeing the timing marks can be impossible. you should also have a slot cut into the dampener.

I will never cut the outside edge of any dampener, never tsk If you do your possibly asking for future troubles with the outer ring fracturing there.
I have marked them with a marker or tape of some sort but I will never cut them after seeing pictures of Bob Glidden old Fairmount that explode a marked dampener twocents That failure lead to NHRA mandated SFI spec dampeners the next year after that work shruggy

The factory cut the balancer so the magnetic pickup could read it.

If I remember Chrysler had a big diagnosis machine I am thinking it was call "EPPA"? It was before DRB1 was out. There was a orange connector under the hood. It was very limited what it could do. It was supposed to have a probe for checking timing but DRB came out to replace this big machine. I never like the machine it would check the battery first and failed just about every one tested!

iagree

Wasn't just motor home engines. IIRC, most all manufacturers had them at one time. work
I do remember after I became a dealer tech that the porters were cleaning the shop one weekend and pressure-washed the old Sun machine while they were at it. shock Needless to say, it never worked right again. laugh2

It was an EEPA, Electronic Engine Performance Analyzer. I have one and really like it.

We had the Aces also.had the smaller versions too.Sohio bought like 80 of each at one shot for the new service placeS they opened. They had no trouble buying equipment. We had presses fro OTC that cost the IIRc 2500 each as they had tons of adapters and had 15 or 25 ton hydraulics.Rocky
