Hey all...have not been on here much in a few years. My boys are putting a 5.9 Magnum motor with air gap intake and headers (maybe 350 hp) in their 64 Sweptline. They are converting it to a carb with the Eddy air gap intake with a Thermoquad on an adapter. We want to keep the magnum front accessories (AC compressor, alt, water pump) with serpentine belt. This means leaving the front magnum timing cover that doesn't have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump.

So...I need a daily driver reliable electric fuel pump that isnt too loud and preferably will not overpower the needle and seat on a Thermoquad even without a external pressure regulator. Maybe I'm asking too much? What's max fuel pressure for a Thermoquad? 5.5 psi?

carter has a low psi pump (I forget the #) but there have been alot of problems with carter pumps but here is a BTT for ya. EDIT P4070

I was looking at that carter too...but I wasn't sure if it needed a regulator with a Thermoquad. Read both that it does and that it doesn't.

I hate noisy elec pumps & have 2 of these Mallory gerotor style pumps. One on my 71 W100 with a pumped up 383 Magnum with an Eddy 800 Thunder & the other on my 68 D100 with a 383 magnum & Eddy 650 AVS. They're super quiet & you can barely hear them running. These are set to 7psi & that's what my regulators are also set at. Mallory makes 70, 110 & 140 gph versions. 110 would be fine for your application. Summit has them for $234.

I have a Mallory 140 sitting on the shelf...and it is pretty quiet. Just worried about longevity on a daily driver (for my teenager)....plus I was trying not to use a regulator because it would have to be a deadhead I think with the stock tank still behind the seat and in perfect condition inside and out (someone had emptied it and ran the truck on propane for many years) and no easy way to add a return. I didn't really want a return coming into the Cab as well.

Edelbrock makes an electric street carb fuel pump. Purchase the relay kit with it.
No regulator needed. Quite? Sometimes you can’t bear it in the day time and have gone to the rear of the car to see if it is on.

Rob C....do you know which Edelbrock pump that your running? One of cheap red plastic body pumps? or the big more expensive "Quiet Flo" pumps?

I just switched to the red Edelbrock when I couldn't live with the Holley Blue racket anymore. First time I turned it on I had to look to make sure it was running properly 'cause it was so much quieter.

Too soon for any long-term opinion, but the initial impression is very good, and it is available at the local chain auto parts store for nearly the same (very reasonable) price as online.

I'm using the 4-7psi version with an Edelbrock 1406 carb feeding a 5.9L.

I would seriously look into the GM in tank pump for the OBD1 throttle body. That little pump fits in the fuel tank and I can not hear it running from the drivers seat. It provides fuel at 10 PSI with enough flow to keep our 454 CI K2500 Suburban tow truck running fine. With the ability to get the vehicle running until after the warranty runs out. NONE of the non-stock aftermarket pumps would be expected to last as long.

My 68 D100 also has the tank behind the seat & I have a fuel cell that
we were going to place inside the frame, under the bed, but think we're going to add a return line to the stock tank so I can finish the resto & get the truck up for sale. The gerotor design pumps are the quietest I've heard & the Holley 150 gph one I had on a Hemi Challenger years back was just as quiet as the Mallory.

Honestly..an oem pump like that would probably be best...just not sure how I could retrofit it to my tank behind the seat. Didn't know they had a non efi...10 psi intake pump...ill research that, see if it's possible to use in my tank.

edited...But I just realized, this would put pressurized fuel in the cab as well.

I just worry about having a return plumbed into the cab with pressurized fuel...just doesn't sound safe to me. To a rear tank...no problem.

I think most electric pumps are going to want a regulator with an Ed type carb. 5 psi max per my understanding. I don't think deadhead is a bad option with good regulator (eg Holly).

There is a mini pump - Mr Gasket - with lower pressure setting and not too noisy. I think it would be marginal with 350 HP however.

Looks like your probably right...i have a Mallory 140 in the garage and just realized I even have a old Holley red pump somewhere ...but I think it needs a rebuild if I remember right. I originally didnt even considering using either one because I didn't want to use a regulator....but might as well use one of them if I need to use a regulator anyways with this carb.

5 psi is safe. Max is 7 psi. You may very well have issues past 7 psi.
You could, for a high performance engine, run a higher psi pump and use a regulator to keep a steady constant flow and pressure. If you have a return line as OE equipment then I suggest making use of it. It will help keep the fuel cooler as well as not stress the pump.

When you mount an electric pump, use some sort of isolater between the pump and frame. This is a huge source of noise that people complain about. A nice piece of 1/8"-1/4" soft rubber or silicone makes a difference. I've even seen guys use wood as well.

Spectra Premium makes a copy or rebrands the original., I think I have seen one other brand.
