I'm replacing bearings, crank and some rods on a 6.1 Hemi. I bought the engine with a spun rod bearing. I will put it in a 1971 Sport Fury and use a A518 overdrive and 3.91.
I will run it all stock except for induction and exhaust and will probably use a MegaSquirt MS3 Gold Hemi controller.
My Sport Fury will serve as a fun daily driver and I was thinking to lower the power band some by advancing the cam a little.
Anyone done this on a 6.1?
I would like some input on this.
Thanks!

I think it’s a good idea. I know the recommendation when putting a 6.1 cam in a 5.7 is to advance it 8 degrees (from the factory installed centerline, not from the LSA). I believe the 6.1 cam has an LSA of 117 and has an ICL of 119 or 121 (I’ve seen both published) so it’s actuall 2-4 degrees retarded (I believe for purely emissions reasons). Seems most mild engines respond with advancing the cam in the 4 degree range so put in in at 113. I’m doing a 6.1 cam into my Ram and that’s where I’m going to install it. I say go for it

Good to hear other people are thinking the same. Compression pressure will be a little higher but with good gas quality and octane I don't think there will be any problem.

How did you do it? I was thinking to modify the original parts but there might be someone who makes adjustable gears?

My Ram is an 05 with a 5.7. There’s adjustable sets that you can get, although I haven’t bought one yet

I have Comp Cams adjustable timing set and 6.1 length pushrods to put in my 5.7.I bought a brand new Chrysler crate engine that a Chrysler tech owned and put a 6.1 cam in but did not advance the timing or change pushrods. This is an older engine but brand new,I think he installed the cam before it was known to advance it a few degrees. This engine is for my 2004 Durango that snapped a connecting rod & ruined the original block. So you are thinking install it @ 113* in the 5.7,I'll have to see what I can get it at with the Comp adjustable set.
Thanks

I found it to be worth to order a new adjustable timing gear set from Comp instead of hassling with the old set.
