Hello my mopar friends. I have not posted in quite a while. No longer have gtx or roadrunn, but still have 1971 Cuda. My question is: engine starts but stops quickly. It is a 1971 hemi engine. changed coil already. Trying to get it back on the road.
suggestions please ...Jim

I was having a intermediate shut off issue in my Charger with a 440 Sixpack it turned out to be the bulk head connection at the firewall. Maybe unplug your engine harness, clean all of the connections, make sure that all of the terminals are poking out thru the connectors properly & lube with dielectric grease.

what do you by starts but stops quickly?

it fires off and then dies as soon as you turn the key to the run position from the start position?

or it actually runs and then dies??

once you get in your 70's you forget stuff. I recall always having one in my cars. Can you test one to see if it works? Also thanks for your help

Test one what? Ballast resister? Yup, use an ohm meter. Also can be a multimeter.

Unplug the connector on one end of the resister on the car, and test it.

The other test you can do is to jumper across it and see if the engine runs. You don't want to let it continue running that way as you could overheat the coil.
It won't run with he ballast unplugged.

If it starts but dies as soon as you let go of the key, that's a classic sign of a bad ballast resistor. The resistor gets bypassed in the START position. That's why it starts just fine but dies as soon as the ignition switch moves to the RUN position.

It could also be a problem with the bulkhead connector, steering column connector or ignition switch. Use a test light to confirm you have power where you should...when you should. Test the blue wire that's connected to the ballast. You should have power there with the key in the RUN position.
