I use regular mineral spirits in mine. It's been in there for 20+ years as still cleans as good as the day I poured it in. It is dirty. I just do a final spray with brake clean once all of the grease and crap is gone.

Currently using diesel but it's stinky. Had used Purple Power and it worked well but expensive.

Been using Super Clean, which is pretty much the same thing as Purple Power.

I have a bud that owns a laundry. He gives me his old mineral spirits that he uses. When it gets dirty, he pulls it out. His dirty stuff is cleaner than most parts washers get after one use. It has soap and sizing in it so it cleans really good. Have have several barrels of it. You might try that if you know someone.

I have been using Krud Kutter from Tractor Supply Company. I have not used it much but no complaints so far.

I bought a drum of solvent from Safety-Kleen and use it in my Harbor Freight solvent tank. Works well. This was years ago, not sure they will still sell drums of solvent to ordinary folks.

Diesel. Cheap, convenient, & usually have some around for my mowers, skid, or truck. Leaves an oil film for rust protection, & can be cut with carb or brake cleaner if needed.

Does it have lye in it? Lye is a great cleaner, paint remover and rust remover. Basically in the stuff in the old "hot tanks". I'll clean my trailer floor(tiles) using Draino but wear old shoes or rubber boots.
I use Varsol in my washer with diesel mixed in.

I buy the 5 gallon cans from Tractor Supply but I’ve been kicking around switching to kerosene because of the strong smell. I use kerosene when I burn so I could change it more often and use it to burn.

My parts cleaner is in a basement, so I use Purple Power (not flammable). I dilute it some with water. My cleaner is heated, so that helps some. Heating takes a while, so pretty often I don't have time to use the heater. At those time, I would like something that cuts a little better.

Mineral spirit in mine now. In the past I have run a green solvent from Grainger that works well... cleans a little faster.

I run a 15 micron filter on mine... basically a hydraulic filter from the farm store of the type used on log splitters.

I work for a Chemical company from Atlanta. I use my companys Circulating Parts Cleaner. It has a flash point over 145 (non-flammable) and has no hazard ingredients accord to Sara 13 titles along with Lanolin to help the old hands out. Mineral spirits has a low flash point and is extremely FLAMMABLE !!@!! panic

I can sell this product and drop ship to most states east of the Mississippi river.

What are peoples’ experience as to hot versus cold liquid cleaning power?

I have seen 120 volt dipstick heaters used to heat fluid.

In the 1980s a salesman from Harvard Filters made a call on a mining operation where I was chief engineer and said he had proved at other of our operations that his portable bypass filter unit with a 0.25 micron rating could clean up any oil or solvent.

We first challenged him to clean the roughly 100 gallon waste engine lube oil tank, which had become visibly clear in 7 days when he returned. We then challenged him to clean an almost tarry like mineral spirits bath in the parts washer of the electric motor shop, about 20-30 gallons. When the salesman came back in another week the horribly black parts washer fluid was amber clear. We ended up buying one portable unit and several fixed units on hydraulic systems.

We had previously used Racor filters on horribly dirty diesel fuel that the CSX Railroad provided us under an old contract for locomotives. For awhile CSX headquarters in Jacksonville thought that blending in filtered used lube oil into clean fresh diesel fuel was economically profitable. When filters for the used lube oil plugged up quickly at local yards workers just bypassed them. Racor brand filters were good but I think Harvard filters were better.

We also had success using “ toilet paper filters” to remove moisture from compressed air lines prior to plasma arc torches.

At work we use safety-kleen solvent now, it's a recycled product that's switched out by their company every few months. Before that we used to use generic solvent from the local bulk petroleum distributor. At home I use gun wash because I got 20 gallons for $12 when a local acklands store was closing and blowing out stock. Works well but don't forget the gloves.

Agreed! Mineral Spirits.
My "parts washer" is a little more low buck, a big plastic Tupperware-like storage container.

Varsol IS mineral spirits (just an Exxon trade name), and is still the best all-around. Having the luxury of working in the chemical industry since the 1700s, aside from glowing in the dark, I am able to mix my own "stuff". I start with mineral spirits and "enhance" it a bit with a couple of very effective known carcinogens. Do what I say, not what I do...

I drained my tank this week and removed all the solvent I got from Tractor Supply. I gave the tank a quick wipe-down and filled it with kerosene. I'm loving it so far after cleaning parts for 5 days. The smell is so much better now.

I have about 2" of solid sludge in the bottom of mine. Maybe it is time to clean mine also. Lol. The solvent itself still cleans great so I just leave it.

Here's a post that I saved from years ago. Photobuckets GREED kinda messed it up but there's still some good info in it.

I bought a used parts washer, actually a "cuda" brand, I use powdered dish detergent, it gets the water near boiling, rotates the parts on a table and sprays the water and cleaner at high pressure on the part. Trans cases, heads or whatever come out nice and clean and ready to paint. I can pull a head for a head gasket, put it in the washer and go scrape the block off and when I am done with that the head is clean and ready to re-install unless it needs a little gasket scraping or milled. I completely quit useing the solvent one with a brush years ago and never looked back, they suck no matter what you use compared to a real parts washer. As for bolts, buts and other small parts I bought an amunition shell polisher from the local gun shop and throw em in with some diesel fuel and some BBs and after a little while in there they come out nice and clean. I have way better things to do than sit there scrubbing parts by hand.
