Has anyone here ever built a SB (340/360) stroker (408-416) using factory cast iron ported T/A heads (opening up the intake ports where the pushrods pass through)? What cam did you use? Suggestions? I'm desiring strong mid-range rpms (2500-3000-5500-6000)for road-course action (HPDE/HSAX, some pylon racing). 727, 2400 BM, 3.23... using lots of 1st... longer in 2nd, brief-long in 3rd.

Car is ~3200# Challenger, street/hwy driven, but mostly on-track intended (road courses). Favoring continued usage of my Pro-Max six-pack setup, runs great! (optional LD340 3310 vacumm, or similar carb).

I have a '72 360 that I intend to use for this build (bringing it to a shop very soon for prepping), along with my old self-ported T/A heads.

T/Anks ahead!

Have you bumped up to a 2.05 or even a 2.08 intake valve?

While I am sure someone has done this, I would think there would be more bang for the buck going another route.

Mopar developed the W2 heads from the T/A castings a long time ago, my message is they can be made to flow some good air with the proper mods up
The bad things is you still end up with a set of old iron heads that could cost a lot more to make them work as well as a new set of Edelbrock or some other good modern aluminum castings that will out flow and out perform any of the older heads like those work
I have build more than one 4 inch stroke SB, both 340 and 360 motors, for street pump gas and drag race motors on race gas up
The heads, intake, carbs. ignition and exhaust determine how much power you can make work
Traction determines how much HP your car can handle, especially going around corners work grin shruggy

Considering he all ready has the heads I don’t see why you guys would tell him to get rid of them. Seems kind of stupid to throw away perfectly good heads. Max power is t the goal but broad torque in a given rpm range. This is a job of a balanced combination starting with the cam as he asked about, not better heads.

I do like the idea of a larger I tKe valve for a better balance.

Mopar Mitch, is talk to the road racers here first and foremost. AutoXcuda comes to mind. IIRC, it is a small solid litter cam he uses. The only advice I can give other thank talk to the been there and done that guys is, keep in mind to maximize the intake and exhaust route of the air pump and it will broaden the cams power band a lot!

Six pack over the LD-340 every time!

I'm betting as rare as those heads are he could sell them and buy something MUCH better for his combo.

If the rules allow aftermarket heads, I have to believe taking a bunch of weight off the nose of the car would really help with the handling.

There have been plenty of stroker small blocks built with cast iron heads. I like the idea of using stuff you already have and maximizing the power from it. It can keep the cost down somewhat. Now having said that I would suggest having the heads flow tested so you have some numbers as to where the heads work best. This would be great info for a cam grinder to get you the best cam for your application. That is who you should ask about a cam instead of these guys that are only going to suggest you put an LS in it or buy some high dollar heads.
