Im about to help a friend out building a 438 of a 383 B engine for his 1970 Newport conv auto 3:23 so i need input on a flat tapper Hydralic cam for that engine that will end up whit alu heads and about 9.5 to 10 in comp. Intake will probably be stock dual plane and stock manifoulds but thats not clear at the moment.

I found a cam whit spec

Lobe sep 110
ICL 107
Duration at 050 Int 232 Ext 237
Lift Int 540 Ext 548

Will i get vacume for the PB ?
Would i benefit in advancing the cam to ICL 103 ?
What hp would i end up whit ?

Chevy puts a 224/234 in the crate 502. I use that as a rough yardstick for street cars. It is a lot smaller than what most people on this board recommend, but you aren't building a race car.

Not a cam expert here, but i bet a cam with about 220/230 max will be very close. Small motor, heavy car, needs torque.

Isky makes a flat tappet hydraulic that'll fry the tires off a dump truck. I had it in my first 451 low deck. Specs out at 488 lift and 236/236 at .050. Didn't have anything power so don't know how it did on vacuum. They also have a 525 at 256/256 that's even gooder. but no vacuum.

Put down the cam catalog down and message Dwayne Porter. He'll custom make a cam just how you want it to drive. Be honest with what you want and he'll nail it for you. Not much more money either.

As a guess, PB will work (just) with that cam with gears and tuning. It will be a little racey/lopey in a 438. Is that what you/your friend wants?

Agree a shorter duration cam like 220@.050 intake duration may be more suitable for the application if it includes street driving and street friendly gears. How is the car set up (gears, tires, converter) and how does your friend want it to behave?

Both good choices.

Lunati Voodoo 262/268-112 is another one.

Yep Dwayne will spec cam that will get the most out of your combo just the way you want. He built my solid flat tappet just as I wanted. I told him my cam needs to be for 92 pump gas and I like a slightly lumpy idle and I want it to make a lot of power. He nailed it for my combo. Ron
