The 308 IS the big bearing. The standard 23 spline bearing is a 307. Also, the retainer O.D. is much larger on the aluminum cases.

this one has the smaller retainer that's 4.7" i think.that's what i don't understand.it doesn't have the 5 1/8 retainer that o.d.'s have.

i think what i'm trying to say is i've never had a 76 aluminum case that would accept a regular 4 spd bellhousing.they all needed the truck b.h.

The OD bearing retainer and the large (big block/hemi) retainer share the same bolt pattern. My son's A-body 18-spline (home built) uses a '75 iron OD case because the original '68 case had a mounting ear broken off.

Do yourself a favor and sell that case for scrap - which it basically is.

1) if its seen average use, the front countershaft hole is going to need to be bushed and should be done on a mill so the hole is bored in the correct location. Even if it were a new case that hole should still be bushed to prevent future problems (they were machined for a floating shaft, not press fit like the iron cases).
2) they don't have anywhere near the strength of an iron case and are prone to the ears breaking of where they bolt to the bell.

Any good tranny guy like Brewers or Passon will tell you to avoid them like the plague. If you're wanting an OD trans, put the guts in an iron case and use a 307 bearing.

Good god, don't scrap it!
Give it to someone who can use it.

Ha! So all it takes is one person to say scrap it and you are? I have a truck 833od in my desoto street rod. I rebuilt it and did not bush the case. It was fine after I don’t know how many miles before I got it and it’s still going strong.

I know someone who will be glad to pay shipping and maybe even a little for your trouble. He has one in a slant six 68 Dart already. He bought it from Passom. Pm your info and I’ll pass along your contact info to my bud.

I run them in my street cars, no issues. I've even put non OD gut i them and run them because it' easier to benchpress into place.

Chrysler put them into everything for over a decade, most in pickups. If they were junk they would have not kept the aluminum case in production.

I have three of them.

So many parts that we used to take for granted because they were so common, are now getting harder and harder to find. It would be a shame to "junk" something rather than offer it up to see if someone could use it. shruggy

Not everyone races their Mopar, some just drive them.

Master, again and still

Yep and to add to this, the typical Moparts answer is the money is no object everyone must be a straight line only hardcore drag racer.

Yeah, that's about 2 people on this list with a crap ton of pretenders.

Put it in the for sale section for cheap and it would probably sell quick. I`m sure someone would want it.

Yes it will use a regular BB bellhousing , you said it measured 4.7 ? It can't, the bolt circle would be out past the edge of the retainer.

running up my post count some more .
