My dad's '69 road runner, 440 w/ a 6 pack setup on it. Complete six pack setup bought brand new as a kit through Mopar back in 2006 or 2007 I think. Came w/ the air cleaner, 3 carbs, Edelbrock manifold, etc. This is a street car, 440 w/ 509 cam, worked over 906s, hemi 4 speed, 3.54 dana, etc. Even has air conditioning.
Ran great for a while, then started having a minor (we thought) issue after a few years. After the car sat for a day or two, it would run VERY rough and ragged the next time you drove it like it had 4 fouled plugs. After mile or two down the road, it would clear right up and run great. Finally got tired of it when it started getting worse. The center carb was draining all its fuel out when it sat. I tore into it the other day and found the outboard carbs are fine, but the center carb's metering block is disintegrating. Looks like the dern thing is made of clay that got wet, then dried and cracked. I can't believe it didn't turn into a water sprinkler and set the car on fire. You can see where the metering block is swollen, cracked, and was actually leaking a little through the casting itself.
Called Holley and they want the carb back. Said they'll either send it back w/ a new block on it or send me a whole new carb. I've had a bunch of Holleys and rebuilt a lot of old ones...never seen anything like this before.

Wholly crap. Never in my life did I see one that bad, or even close. I would be careful what you post especially if they are going to work with you. Some companies like to do damage control, some don't.

Restored hundreds of carbs. Never seen that kind of deterioration even on carbs much much older.

Didn't mean to sound like I was bad mouthing Holley, not what I intended at all. The guy I talked to was great to deal with and I'm not mad at all about it. We've had the thing for 10+ years anyway. Just curious if anyone else has seen this.

Probably not the case with that one BUT years from now I see big issues coming because of alcohol content. I know from running alcohol extra maintenance is needed and luckily I can do it. My Sons fuel regulator needs the top taken off of it every time the car sits for over 3 weeks. I got caught with bad floats on my 3 year old carb early this year and from now on will be changed out every other year. 10% alcohol in pump gas and some places have 10% and on up to 85% so extra care will be needed by all.

Was it only one of the carbs, or all 3 that showed this sort of decay? I sure hope Holley steps up and takes care of you. Looks like they had some bad RM's go through their foundry.

Have seen that just a couple times lately and the plating is separating/flaking off of the carb parts and why I steer away from the old junk and only build alum/billet when possible......... And these were gasoline not alcohol..........

The other carbs both look fine, but the outboards don't have metering blocks. The main body and bowls on all 3 look fine. It's just the metering block. Has to be a metallurgy issue. It's not just the coating, the entire block is coming apart.
The dominator on my hemi is just as old and has also had pump gas run through it. No issues w/ that one. This car does a good bit of sitting up though...probably what did it in.
93 octane pump premium, nothing else has been in it.

For a car that sits like that, I'd be looking at using something like "carb defender" in it.
Although I doubt it would have helped prevent what you have going on there..... But it might have.
