I'd like to know if anyone here has painted their engine block some form of cast metal in color such as cast iron or cast aluminum? I'm looking to do something different this time with my engine color. Pics would be appreciated if you have any.

I've used the duplicolor engine enamel aluminum color many times. Comes out basically looking like any other aluminum part. I've used it on aluminum rims. The color is close enough that is really spruces up old, rough or peeley aluminum rims.

I like the idea of the cast-iron color, but I haven't done it. I paint my SB race motors a light grey, which is an old Penske trick to catch any weepage immediately. Been good luck so far, no leakers, haha.

The "Cast Aluminum" spray bomb paint I've used on intake manifolds looked pretty nice, but I have no experience using the "Cast Iron" finish stuff.

The 400 in my dart is cast gray. I like it. I've used the aluminum paint on intakes, also looks good. I don't have any pics at the moment

Yes, used Cast Blast I believe.
Kind of hard to see with all the components on but here's a pic. Been painted for 18 years.

Also a tip.... spray a coat of high temp clear over the cast iron paint. The paint does actually have cast iron in it and will tend to form rust easily.

I have used the same color (cast blast metal gray) as Baxter61 but not on my eng. I used it on my steering linkage and and some eng brackets and so on. I like it as it looks good and keeps the parts you use it on from rusting. Ron

mr. P, i've used the rustoleum hammered paints before, but get mixed results. i have done several wheels that were pitted badly, but turned out pretty good because they were laying flat, and i could lay the paint on in a somewhat controlled manner, getting a uniform pattern. but when i have tried to shoot something like your heater box shown, the pattern seems inconsistent. any tips you can share ? the other item i find is the paint seems kind of "soft", unless it dries for months and months before putting into service. is this normal ?

More than likely you are putting on to thick..but if you
put on multi coats it will change the color also.. I like
to use 2 coats 3 at max and let each coat dry before adding
the next coat.. I've painted my last 3 engines with it
and I like the color and the way it comes out... one of the
things is the distance you hold the can.. try a couple of
different distances to see how it does

From my experiences, that is normal with rustoleum paint.

I think the engine in my car is about the same color as Baxter61's. I don't really like it I was looking for a more silvery color. TJP from this board rebuilt my 4 speed and painted it a cast color which is more to my liking. He told me it was Plasti Kote, rebuilders cast finish, Part #285. Not sure if it will hold up to engine heat, but you could check it out.

I only use real car paint 2K and start whit a strong epoxy primer but it needs to be SUPER clean before you start painting !
