Thats right..... on the 3rd torque stage my new manley head bolt broke off on the #16 torque bolt sequence........ was torquing to 70lbs and SNAP.. the headbolt broke right in half...... whats the best way to get this thing out...... can you buy 1 manley head bolt?

the shorter one...... Im guessing since the threads didnt strip out maybe the bolt bottom out??? dont know..... didnt have a problem with my eddy heads...

yes the bolts were lubed up......

Indy EZ heads BTW...

you need to stay away from wrenches better have that torque wrench checked

did it break off flush with the block? or is there some sticking out, if theres enough sticking out to grab with visegrips, just pull the head, and get it out, and replace?

if its flush, maybe try drilling it out? or using one of those ez outs or whatever.

i had the same issue with manely bolts last year. i went with studs . but take the head of and take it out . i dont think it can bottom out , so if it was lubed you should be able to get it out easily. i dont know if you did or not but i always chase every thread in a block , even if the machine shop does it or not...

If the threads were chased and the bolt was lubed it should come out pretty easy. You may be able to tap the bolt out with a pointed chisel untill you can grab it with your fingers or a vice grip.
If not its easy out time.

Id replace ALL the bolts with Arps! Whats this about you wanting 1 Bolt. Replace them all, mike

I had a Manley break on mine while putting it back together right at 70 lbs . Took the head back off and screwed it out with my fingers . I bought a set of ARPS .

Before you do any type of tool on it, use you finger
pushing on the end of the bolt while turning, I've
had alot come out easy after something went wrong.
Alot of times the snap shakes them free

Wedge, I dont know the correct part number of the Arp bolts for your heads. I have it somewhere Im sure, but it maybe just as easy to call Arp.

If your heads use the Same Arp bolts as the Eddy RPM,s, and I think they might. The Eddy part# for the headbolts is #8591 Witch is actually the Arp bolts.

Oh, and like MrPBody said, Sometimes you can even just press your thumb or finger against the snapped off bolt and it may twist out. mike

If you cant get it out, dont drill it etc. Take a large nut ( 3/4") , center it over the broken bolt, and touch off the mig welder a few times inside the nut and weld the stud to the nut...it will come right out. Its better than taking the chance of getting drill filings in the motor.

it should come out easy- if mr p bodys trick doesnt work (try that first) there should be no tension on the bolt unless it bottomed out

If the bolt is broken flush and I can't spin it out with my finger or a pick, I sometimes slot the stub with a cut-off wheel and use a screw driver.

Manley head bolts go in dry.I bet it bottomed out or the lube increased the torque.

I still think it bottomed out..... however without removing the head I am gonna try a hex head wrench with some superglue and let it harden and see if I can back it out that way.....

summits site:
Manley offers these superior cylinder head bolt kits for a variety of applications. They are longer than stock for use with washers, heat treated for added strength, and their 1/2 in. hex head improves wrenchability.

I've done the welder and nut thing before, it works
but I also have the welders to do it. I sure hope it
wasnt bottomed out for you

Could just be a fluke. Everything breaks. I was just talking to a guy that had two ARP studs break during install in a cummins.

I have used the manley bolts on 4 occassions now without issue. I hope you can get it out without too much trouble.

I just had a problem with a Manley bolt bottoming out last week. It was one of the med. length bolts in the left front with Indy -1's. I was torqueing it down and it felt springy so I new what it was so I took it back out and I could see the bottom thread was shiny. I put a hard washer on it and then it torqued down fine. My heads are milled .060. Manley says to install them at 70 ft. lbs. dry. They say they have a dry film coating on them that does not need any other lube. I also plug weld a nut on a stubbern stud to get it out. As soon as you stop welding, while it is still hot you can touch a candle to it and let it suck the wax around it. This works good if the hole is rusty. If it is just bottomed it probably won't help.

If you can't do as Dr. Diff suggested, another way is to drill a series of overlapping 1/8" holes in line so as to make a screwdriver slot.

well I pulled the heads off and there was just enough for me to grab the top of the bolt and get it out...... if anyone wants to buy my other manley headbolts pm me.... I only installed one side and of course the other side is missing a short one now.
