I encountered the same thing Wedge. I picked up my Valley plate used at a swap meet. it liked a good 1/4 before touching the head. I just ran a bead of sealer, let it dry, ran another on top of it. and bolted the clean head down while the sealer was a little tacky..

Yes, you must seal the head to the valley plate with a bead of silicon...

How come indy don't supply a gasket for this?

Got the Indy valley plate which has to go on before the heads (572-13s) , got an oil leak between heads & plate even though the heads were bolted down on a bed of sealer , seems the gap between heads & plate is a good 3/8".

Anyone else have this problem , as said above , WHY don't indy supply a gasket?

I set the head on with the sealer a little smudgy and then laid a bead across the gap and spread it smooth with my finger..

We usually mill the sides off the valley plate so that we can remove it with the heads in place. We apply a heavy bead of black RTV and smooth it with our finger and remove any excess with a razor blade.Zero leaks.

That is why I ended up designing and making my own valley plates.

That's a great idea Bob , thanks.

Or remove water pump etc & pull plate out from the front.

The used setup I bought before the 2008 season seemed to fit fine. The gap for silicone was only maybe 1/16". Maybe you can see in this pic (open attachment) that the head doesn't go all the way to the top of the angle cut on the valley plate, but the gap is small.

572-13 heads are 13 degres, I bought a valey plate from Indy it had a large gap also so I measured it, It was 8 1/2 on one end and 8 3/8 on the other end witch caused an almost 3/16 gap I new it wouldnt seal so I sent it back for exchange. When they recived it I called them they claimed that the almost 3/16 gap was within spec, so I asked them to send me another one anyway, that was three weeks ago and I'm still waiting for it. So it looks like you all may have to live with that gap

The plates I make are CNC machined so they fit correctly. I make them so they are flush with the deck which leaves a gap of about 0.030 (head gasket thickness) that is filled in with RTV.
