I use .012 or larger, looser is better than to tight

WOW! I would think that .012 is on the tight side I was thinking like 020 would be on the tight side. I wrote mine down when I did the motor 4 years ago I will have to check!

My street motor(518 C.I.) has a set of CAT H beam BB Chevy rods that have .052 on one journal and the tightest is around .030 I think that the Mopar factory service manuals call fro .008 to .020 on most of thier motors, I have never seen one that was close to .020 before tear down from the factory, all of them are wider than .020 I have seen a lot of discussion on this forum on rod side clearances about having to much causing high oil consumption due to flooding the cylinder walls at high RPM, I have always thought that the rod bearing clearances are more important than the side clearances when it comes to oil control on the cylinder walls

scared me too. i had something like .026-.030 and I was

but sure enough, thats ok. I even read in my engine manual or my rebuild book a warning about excessive oil loss if they were looser than .020. but its not a real worry says the internet

I think my 440 source rods were around .017-.019 ..but I didn't write it down, I just checked it to make sure it wasn't too tight, saw they were all ok, and continued putting it together.

Don'T worry if it ends up being even .050+ wont hurt a thing. Back before the days of all these stroker cranks etc, you would run into this often with a crank and Chevy rods, never had one single problem IIRC I ran a engine around .070 or so. I know its not prefer ed, but didn't hurt a thing.

Mine is .035, Ideally it would have a lightweight billet in it instead.

My old school chevy rods are bet .035-.050 so who knows. I`ve personally seen motors fail with around .009.

Better loose than tight. The only adverse effect of wide clearence is that more oil is thrown on the cylinder walls.Too tight and you may get gaulding or metal transfer from rod to rod or rod to crank. Some times you just have to live with the extra clearence.
