I just picked up this '75 W300 Dump to use as a beater truck. Full time 4x4, 318 4spd. Runs great - motor rebuilt, new clutch, everything else gone through.
The axles have 4.88 gears in them - which is great for hauling - but a little steep at 65mph!. The tires are only 30 inch tall. Can I put a taller, and maybe more aggressive tread on a dually? The original split rims are gone - and have been replaced by newer steel wheels. I am just not familiar with the dually world - and what I can do with tires. I'd like to get the tires to 33" at the minimum- or maybe a little taller to help with rpms when I'm going 65mph. Also, would like a tread that will be better for driving through my pastures.
Any advice?

Problem with going larger in diameter is that the tire usually gets fatter which could have the sidewalls rubbing each other. BTDT
If you don't need the pulling grunt, go to 3.54 gears.

Well, the gears do help the truck get up and move. The 318 has an RV cam in it - and it runs really well. The tires on it are actually new - so there is no need to replace them. I will probably just watch craigslist to see if there are any wheel and tire combos that i could snag and bolt on. Not a real urgent thing - I only use this truck for parts runs and working on our property. It will do 60-65mph, but the full time 4x4 running gear is screaming, as well as the 318.

Cool truck. That thing would be a dog with 3.54's, 4.10's would probably be so-so. Yes you can do some research and run a taller tire with a narrow profile, remember you have to keep all 6 the same.
It's easy to convert that front Dana 60 to part time hubs, not sure if anyone still makes a part time kit for the NP203 transfer case.
My son is running 19.5 medium truck tires on his dually but it was big bucks buying new tires, rims etc.

Any advice? If you want aggressive tread for driving thru pastures, leave the tire size alone and get aggressive tread. I think in the end you will like the truck better. My 2cents

I assume 16 inch rims? What size on there now?
235-85-16 is a 32 inch tire. To get taller than that means a wider tire. Not easy to balance the height with the width b/c of the dually axle I run this on my 93 dually. Works well Does the OP's truck have coined wheels? There is a TSB out there in the internet showing how to mount dually wheels.
