I drive my HEMI convertible, all I can. I am often asked, what is the gas mileage? If you drive a HEMI convertible to a car show and take the hardware home, who cares? But after 5 years and 6,000 miles, I thought I would check it. Now I know how to produce good mileage numbers, but real world? I filled up just before the entrance ramp on I-75 and drove 74 miles just as I would my company truck, 70-80mph depending on traffic. The car is a 66' Coronet convertible with a 540" HEMI, two 750 Hollys on a Marine intake, 4175lb empty, (add 400lb. for two passengers, 3.54 gear, 250+ 11" torque converter and Gear Vendors overdrive. The tack stayed at a steady 2,200-2,500 rpm. If I got behind a truck, I passed it! We had many horn blows, and thumbs up as we made the trip. We came off the interstate and filled up at the same pump, 12.9 mpg. 4.5" stroke, Mopar Performance heads, 10.78 compression, .248/.254@ .050 cam on 112 l/c cam

I was able to tune my EFI 572 HEMI with 3.54 gears to yield 14 MPG in my 1964 4000 pound Dodge with no compromise in drivability. That would be hard to do with a carb and normal ignition since I not only leaned out the cruise area but I also emulated vacuum advance with the timing. Never opened the hood.

Rich, that is cool, wish I was capable of tuning as I drove the car!
