I'm buying a set for a low $$$ mostly stock carbed 5.9 Magnum with a Hughes Whiplash cam. I ordered an "old" Whiplash grind that doesn't require machining the heads for bigger springs.

Hughes claims that the Engine Quest valve guides will cause problems unless you buy a set from Hughes with their replacement bronze guides.

Has anyone had issues with these heads out-of-the-box? shruggy

i remember a thread on here and a few guys were saying they didn't have problems with the factory guides if you get the clearances correct.

You can't use a larger spring for a taller cam w/o machining the head.I think the limit is close to .500 lift.

I'm using the Hughes #1110 Springs as recommended by Hughes for the cam I bought, head does not need to be machined.

My EQs were limited to .530 lift without trimming the guides using a Comp cams 26995 beehive spring.

Dakota guys had problems with the older EQ heads seizing the valves in the guides, they were fixed with bronze liners installed into the original guides.

There was NO problem with the older EQ heads. These heads were never meant for the end user and were sold purposely with tight guides so the rebuild shops could size them to their preferred clearances. BUT then Hughes butted in and convinced EQ to change their tooling and send them with bronze liners which come WAY too loose--its actually ridiculous. I am however just finishing up a set and EQ has moved away from the crappy bronze liner thing. These heads are nice again. J.Rob

My set came with cast iron guides. They also came with .002 taper and extra clearance at the top of the guide. I decided that w a s too much, and opted for bronze inserts for longer life.

There is a difference in production runs. The originals were made in New Zealand/Australia and the newer ones are china. Many changes were made.

Yes there was, I know of three Dakota trucks and two ram trucks from my Dakota sites and a couple facebook pages that had problems with valves siezing and breaking with the older version heads. some were out of the box, some were installed and "checked" by a performance shop that I will not name to avoid a flame war.

interesting... where is the cutoff for older/newer? I rebuilt a 360 (stock) for a 01 Durango and used a set of EQs assembled, plopped them on out of the box.... went to $#!t with less than 3 hours of total run time.
I put 6 miles on that engine, 3 of those miles were "non running" on the back end of a tow strap. I pushed the Durango back into the garage and "forgot" about it til this last weekend. I picked up a good used low mile 360 and decided to pull my brand new EQs off of the fouled engine, while I regasketed the whole engine before sticking it in there. SURPRISE//// #4 exhaust bent pushrod W T F? pull valve covers... #4 exhaust valve stuck. Pull heads. that valve is bent to He11 and I see the imprint in the head of my brand new piston. Heads are in the machine shop for repair as we speak. I built this engine in Oct/Nov 2016, and Durango has been sitting since then untouched.
How would I know if I got Australian or China heads? This is the 3rd set of EQs I have bought and used, 1st set was bare, 2nd set was assembled, running fine on my son's Ramcharger, this being the 3rd set I have bought. The 1st 2 sets came shipped to my door, the "problem" set I picked up myself and paid for at the AAEQ Midwest warehouse in Chicago. I remember when I was there, they had PILES of these heads brand new in boxes...… I know 110% for sure, the bare heads I bought and put onto my 83 D250 were Austrailian cast. I had 5 cracked OEM heads here that I stripped, and cherry picked the best 2 heads' worth of hardware out of that 5 heads' worth, touched the valves up on a valve grinder, hand lapped then and put them on.

I was JUST getting ready to buy another set from Eric Haugland of AAEQ in Las Vegas. I did have em checked out (not sure what I had to have done, it was a long time ago) but they worked OK. Should I call him & how to I tell if it is a legit set? (the first set were in New Zealand boxes).
