I'm building a 71 challenger convertible factory big block 4 barrel car. It is not numbers matching and im going to be putting a shaker hood on because come on who would complain about a shaker lol. This is the first time i have ever done a full blown back to factory style restoration especially on a car of this kind of value. With all of that said my car was painted the Y8 gold poly possibly one of the ugliest colors in my opinion. My question to evryone is do you think painting the car a color other than what is on the fender tag would hurt the value?

Some people will say it will, some will say it won't, I say it's your car, paint it the way you want and don't worry what anyone else thinks.

Even if it was, big deal, paint it the color you desire...or are you building it for the next owner?

Everything is for sale lol. I dont plan on keeping it forever so yes i wo uld sell or trade it. It's also on a rotisserie and going to be painted underneath as well make it a lot harder to change the color for someone

Sell it 'as is' now & let the next guy decide. Take your proceeds, buy your 'forever' car & do what you want to IT.

Painting it with a color that was available on that car has the lowest risk of hurting value and wont stand out as different at a show or when you sell.

Restored convertibles that swap their 318s for 6packs/hemis with shakers seem to consistently pull the money. I think on those a color change to high-impact even helps. Buying public might consider them a couple steps from "restomod". If you have all matching numbers 383 then a color change would definitely hurt value, and some here would castrate you.

Yours to do what you want, but if you're looking to someday maximize value, a non-number case is muddier. I think a color change is ok, but better if accompanied by a "high impact" engine and appropriate top/interior color. Thinking, if I saw it for sale and you restored everything to factory spec except ONLY the paint and shaker, I would wonder why you kept a non-numbers 383 in it, because your price would probably be equal to a 6pack/hemi car to get your restoration money back.

If I think I'll sell, I always paint it the original color... I used to think I'd keep them, but not I know better. Paint it gold and be done with it, even ugly colors look good when they are fresh and shiny.

I have a 71 Challenger 340 that is also GY8 - currently it's Gunmetal Grey.

However I would stay with the original color if I was to paint the car.

I am with the "paint what you like" crowd. I run a '70 challenger. It is in its original color and all stock except: chassis, engine, transmission, rear end, brakes, wheels/tires, exhaust, suspension and other stuff I forgot to list. I built it to drive and enjoy doing so.
