Just got my 1977-model 727 back from a local trans shop, full rebuild on a decent-running unit behind a lo-po 440 NY'er. I didn't expect anything strange, and they said they didn't find anything strange, but I found this in the pan when I pulled it for a look-see:

I'm mostly concerned with the e-clip / c-clip whatever clip that is, I would like to know where that might go before I call the shop back to explain.

The other thing just has me baffled - any clue what it might be?

The text on it says " T. T. 1/2PT " and if I google that, one option comes back as some sort of Proto Tools socket... ?

Thanks in advance...

Clair

The c-clip looks like the one for the parking pawl. The bottom pic looks like what they use on paint can lids for shipping.

I'd be concerned with the entire "rebuild"!

iagree With both, clip for paint cans and questioning the build when you find parts in the pan... who knows what else could be in there you don't see.

If that is your transmission pan in the pics I would be most concerned with what looks like metal particles left in the pan. I hope that rebuild came with a warranty.

Any shop that leaves that in a pan is one I wouldn't have anything to do with. The pan should be clean as new after a rebuild. After all how hard is it to wipe a rag around in it. I would wonder if they did the rebuild at all. Shoot AAmco does better than that and they reuse old parts

Was the trans tested on a dyno before you took delivery? There is no excuse for those pieces in the pan however, the other material shown in your picture might be normal after running it on the dyno.

This is why I rebuild my own transmissions. If it dies I have no one to blame but myself.

I'd be all over that. If they left parts in the pan, they probably shortcut you in many ways. No excuse for that. Especially the metal pieces and that thing with the numbers on it.

It was from the end of the parking pawl... At this point I'm going to pull the valve body and check all of the clearances / torques per the service manual and make sure what I find is close to spec. What sent me down this road is finding what felt like a lot of crud left on the outside of the case before it was spray-bombed metallic gray. And only two bolts holding the pan on...

I've rebuilt a 727 a couple of times before, and have had mixed luck. I'm better prepared now - more of the tools needed, more smarts, more patience... I farmed this out to trade money for time. I got a lot of cleaning up done in the garage, but I hate to have to worry about the rebuild now.

I'm sure the trans wasn't tested on a dyno, it's a small shop and I don't think they have that capability. If everything was done right it shouldn't be an issue, but dyno testing gives a lot of comfort prior to turning the key.

The pieces in the pan are all old gasket material or something like that. If the pan had been wiped out, it wouldn't have begged a question.

Your pic's are indicative of a very SLOPPY rebuild if they actually did anything to it other than a spray can bomb job. I would ask for my money back and find a reputable shop or do it yourself, twocents

If they lost all but 2 of the pan bolts, wonder what else is missing?

OK, I took a look at what I had with the VB out of the way. New seals everywhere that I can see. Inside, she's clean. Some form of grease-type assembly lube was visible at logical locations, and the VB appears to have the Trans-go TF-1 shift kit installed and adjusted per the instructions I had sitting around. Bands are new. I'm going to verify the band adjustments, torque the VB bolts and screws to spec, chase the pan bolt threads, and button her up.

If I'm honest, can't swear that all of the pan bolts were in place when I delivered the trans, but I don't know why they wouldn't have been. I did drain the fluid before storing the trans, but I can't imagine NOT putting the bolts back in. However, since I didn't verify... I'm going to give they guy the benefit of the doubt here. As for the clip? [ Moparts Family Site - Keep it Friendly ]...

For now, I'm going to chalk this up as sloppy QC on the case, and will let the guy know what I found, and what didn't meet my most basic expectations. I don't think I'm off base expecting a squeaky clean trans inside & out, and that little extra work helps him avoid warranty work due to contamination. If he wants to grow this little family-run business, he's going to have to step it up a bit.

Did you install a new converter with this rebuild? How did you clean the cooler/s and lines?

The converter is the one original to this 77-model 727, reworked at a local shop to match the 440 HP specs. I'm running an external cooler now, but will be replacing it with a larger unit. Lines from the '77 will be reused if they are in decent shape, but I may bend up a new set since I'm not going with the in-rad cooler at all.

Was asking because the little dark deposits in your pan could have easily been leftover from the previous converter, lines and/or cooler. Stacked plate coolers are very hard to clean, single pass coolers you can backflush and get the loose debris out, cooler lines same thing.
