I just got the drivetrain reinstalled into the '69 Barracuda, and discovered the neutral safety switch plug does not fit onto the switch. They are both three-pin type, but the plug housing interferes with the switch before pin contact is made. Did Mopar change switch or plug designs through the years? I don't know whether to change the switch or the plug...

Sounds like the plug dried out and won't expand over the switch. It is a snug fit to keep water out.

I thought in 69 it was a single pin connector and it switched to a three pin connector in 70, but that isn't right.

They switched the switch on 5/15/68 to the three pin.

As mentioned these fit super tight so make sure all your blades are straight.

There was a change to them at some point because i've had problems plugging them in with transmission swaps before.

They got extra crispy if there are headers on the car, either way, probably need a new end. They are available.
69 should have 3 pin connector.

Yes. There are two types of 3 pin plug.

when we ran that style switch (3 pin), we'd upgrade to the newer connector/switch like the mid 90's trucks have.

Thanks to all for your comments. It looks like I need a new connector pigtail. All the new ones I see listed have the wires coming off the side of the molding. My old one has the wires coming straight out the back.

The other two terminals are for backup lights. I don't have them on my car so I ended up using a crimp splice on a single wire squeezing it down to where it just barely fit over the center pin.

The 3-prong NSS design changed in '78, late design is on far right.

Yep, I have the later design. The OD of the plastic ring around the outside is visibly larger, preventing the '69 plug from going on. I have ordered a new switch and harness to resolve this issue. Thanks to all.

I think you could keep your connector and change the switch. I beleive the internal comb stayed the same. If you want I can check Munroe's book.

I am getting both a new connector and switch. If I have problems getting things to work, I will come back in. Thanks.

were some of the front wheel drive switches usable on the 727/904 transmissions, or maybe just the switch plugs ?
