Got this engine about 17 years ago from a guy in State College PA who had it in his parents basement since the mid to late 70's. It's standard bore, forged crank. The intake and front cover are just on it for parts storage purposes. They weren't on it when I got it. What's the numbers say of it?

From a 1969 A-body at the Hamtramck plant, but all '69 back model year 340s were in A-bodies as far as cars are concerned.

EW340P28480148 this is the engine serial number (not to be confused with the partial VIN, this number came first)

E - Series - (model year) 1969

W - Windsor Ontario engine assembly plant

340 - 340 CID

2848 - Engine final assembly date from the 10,000 day calendar - May 15, 1969

0148 - 148th engine completed at the plant above on the date above

Cool deal...I kept this 71 340 since 1977 when I totaled a real 340 RT challenger. I brought the short block into a spare bedroom with a 2 wheel dolly in 1984 when I got my house. I have a basement but the bedroom was easier to use. It sat in this exact spot until 2007 when I needed it and it got put in my 74 car with the edlebrock heads. Still running today. I kept the forged crank and replaced the heavy factory hi compression pistons with KB 243 10.5-1 hyper pistons. Kept my compression up and was able to use a lighter piston on stock rods. I did not re balance, factory balance job and it runs great.

I had a second spare bedroom full of car parts...until I got remarried and then it all had to go to the basement.
