I am telling you --last few sets of heads and now this block the decks were cut with two passes--just stupid!! last set of heads had a .003 step
In my shop I surface used ragged heads when a .002 will slip under a straight edge--just stupid to pay for new heads that were done in "shop class" and have TWO different "levels'

Were those last sets of heads with the poor surface finish "assembled" heads or "bare" heads?

When I get bare heads from Indy, they don't come with a "finished" deck surface.
The finish on the assembled heads has been fine.

To set the deck on the block I can see where it was also not finished as expected

I was waiting to see if they said anything at the Indy trade show. I did hear that it was a possibility. Birdtracker

Indy states their aluminum block as rough bored and "fully machined". I guess in my mind fully machined rough bored would be a proper line hone, square deck, correct lifter bore angle and finished lifter bores.

Yes, there is talk " on the street" some notable folks were interested. If its true, lets just say they wont have a lack of funds, and lack of ability if they want to do something.I dont know how it will affect pricing, but I think everything else will change for the better. Have to wait and see.

Of course ymmv, but of the 4 bb mopar "finished, ready to assemble" aluminum blocks I've used(3 world, 1 Indy), only the Indy block didn't need any reworking prior to assembly.

Unless the deck was specified and paid for, that would not surprise me at all. I was probably left way high also, so that it could be adjusted.

The World blocks I used had the "no name" main studs, and on two of them they wouldn't torque up to their spec(which is quite a bit lower than the arp spec).
So, buy new arp stud kit, TQ to arp spec, mains out of round, crank just locks up.
Have to line hone mains.

Check cylinder bores...... Sizing is "okay"...... It's usable...... Except they didn't set the stroke on the honing machine correctly, and the bottom 3/8" of the bore has zero honing marks and is .005 undersize.
Luckily I checked this prior to ordering pistons........ Cuz you can't just hone the bottom 3/8" of the bore.
By the time I get the bottom opened up, and get it all straight again, the bores are .0025" oversize.
I ordered pistons to fit the new bore size, but had I "assumed" I could use the block at the "finished" 4.500 size I would have been screwed.

The two blocks I got from Bill Mitchell's were both like this(a few years ago now).
The third one came from somewhere else, and it was a real mess all around.

One off friends has a CNC block machining center and he does all kinds of blocks for several shops in his area......... He tells me about 1/2 the time they're not really all that great in terms of sizing, finish, true to blueprint specs, etc.

It's just another mass produced part........ Inspect/adjust/tweak as req'd before use.

I also heard yesterday Indy might be sold.

I also heard Bulldog is back and casting Hemi blocks now. Casting is supposedly being done in Indiana, and someone who got burned before is bankrolling it. shock

I personally have NEVER bought a race block that was ready to throw parts in, whether it was alum or steel, from any company, for any brand. Of course I have never ordered a "fully machined and finished" block either. I would rather bore it, hone it and square it myself

Could not agree more with what Monte said. I don't think anyone making a race block will tell you to assemble it as we deliver it and go. At least not off the record.

I haven't bought an Indy block myself but I've talked to a couple of shops who do buy them. They buy unfinished blocks from Indy since they found out that they needed to re-machine all of the critical surfaces anyway.

The local shop I work with uses a lot of Dart blocks for Chevy circle track engines. The Dart blocks seem to be ready to go out of the box for the most part. They all get checked over but usually they are right.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a KB block in the near future. I think the new team there will have the capability of sending out blocks which are finished properly.

Your block wasn't decked. Those numbers on the surface are from the process prior to the sleeves being installed. The block would have been decked following that. If you bought it direct from indy in the notes section of your invoice will be a deck height called out and a charge for that in the itemized print. If that's not there, it would come just as you show

If it is there....then they skipped the step and you are owed money back and I'm sure a call would resolve it. I happen to have worked there for 3 years and still speak with the guy who decks the blocks.

Man I am OK with it
I have seen heads this year that had the "two step" line down the middle where it was two different levels from what looked like two passes--then at a friends the other day I saw the block with the same deal--again I say I have never bought any other heads that were new and needed surfacing so be it with Indy I don't care
