So I just changed my oil on my new truck. I went with the Mobil 1 extended performance advertised to go 15k as well as their oversized extended interval filter. Does the guage on my truck move down towards "change oil" based off time or milage or what? Or does it actually analyze the oil? If based off milage is it based on the old 3k mile rule? I plan on changing it at 7k or so.

it works off mileage. check your owners manual for exact info, you might also be able to change that setting.Don't quote me ,but i think the oil change reminder is set at 7000 miles. When the reminder comes on, you need to manually reset after oil change. it does not know that you changed it. I know it is higher than the normal 3000 miles. might be able to find the info in the instrument cluster info.

Thanks for the info. I've been reading around the Internet and came up with varying info but most said what you did. Set to a milage but can come due sooner if towing often or driving harder. I track the milage so I'll just change at 7k. I can manually reset if it comes up due before that.

Thx

when my 2012 ram 1500 5.7 had a lifter collapse at 14,000 miles the dealer said if I couldn't provide proof of 4,500 miles interval oil changes warranty would not cover it.I did come a little unglued on the service dept!!

They shouldn't be able to say that if the owners manual says you can go longer. Were they looking for proof of you taking it for services at a dealer or quick lube type 0lace or were your receipts for doing it yourself good enough?

the "change oil" gauge works off mileage and driving habit, temperature duty cycle. Use your truck for highway trips, you'll see a long interval. Mostly short tripping, it will come on a lot sooner. 7k...depending on your driving habits, shouldn't be an issue.... besides, it's a good time to rotate your tires anyways smile. Personally if it's mostly city... I'd be leary about running it that long, but that's just me. I tend to keep vehicles way too long.

Major warranty repairs sometimes like a court case. you come in with good documented history, it makes it easy peasey to present a case. Bring a car in with 42K on it and the filter is still stamped "original filter".... not so good. If DITY, keep a good notebook, with receipts and keep it documented well. It really helps if things go bad.

Jbody dont laugh but we had a woman bring in a new Pontiac years ago.Motor locked.still had the OE oil and filter and it had like 38K miles. She neve checked it or anything.Worst part was she argued she still had time and mileage to go.Dealer charged her 500 bucks for a new engine and she complained.Other had we had a Dodge van V6 with 500K on the clicker.Guy had oil changed every 3K and lots of miles were highway same with a 4 cyl cavalier. It had 300K and oil changed every 3K.Only reason the guy traded was oil leaks.I change oil every 3K or so.Rocky

well do to others "beta testing" it's been proven that a 2010-2013 Chrysler 2.4 (Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Jeep Patriot) will go 35K on the original oil.... just don't go 38-40, it'll fail laugh2 We've seen two go the above listed miles.... I can't comprehend HOW anyone can be so far in left field as to NOT change the oil. These cars even have "CHANGE ENGINE OIL" messages that come up in the cluster. Both claims were denied.

I changed oil on a 2015 2500 Ram with a diesel last week with over 14K on it. Oil % minder was at 2%. It would be interesting to see how that one survives at it's current pace.

Our Pacific with the 3.5 used a qt of oil every 3k until it had 140K on it. Now with 198K it will go 4K + and not use a drop.
2500 w/t Cummins 5-7K it gets changed. 168K on that one.
96 4.0 Cherokee. lots of short trips and slow desert driving. every 3K 164K on that one. We need a new car!
