I actually use Plasti-cote cast aluminum engine paint and it looks very close to bare metal and holds up well even when used in high heat situations. Grab a can of all the stuff you think you might want to use and do spray outs to see what matches the closest in your view.

Jeff Lilly is a restorer who contributes to restoration magazines and has done research on this topic. He shares his results with good information here: http://www.jefflilly.com/ > Build Tips > silver paints He tested 18 different rattle can paints that are supposed to give a bare metal look for cast iron, cast aluminum, bare steel, etc. He says that the kind of light in which the part will be viewed should be the test criteria. A control arm would be viewed in well shaded natural light at a car show. If so, then his choice for bare steel is Seymour Stainless Steel 16-054, photo #18 on the web. Maybe what is implied is that this paint is too light in direct sunlight but a good match if in the shade. He also likes Plasti Kote 285 but calls it a cast iron paint.
