I 2nd that. I've used Boeshield on most bare metal parts on my car. It's been almost 10 years and no rust. Fantastic product.

I have used ZEP Ironclad on bare metal undercarriage parts. Good stuff, but I think you have to buy it by the case.

Sorry guys I didn't give you the right details....... I'm not looking for some type of clear to protect (new) bare metal, I have a clean blasted lower control arm with a coat of primer on it that I wish to paint and have look like bare steel......... I heard that Seymore has a stainless steel paint in rattle can that seems close and POR-15 has metal mask which is also close but I've never tried them so no clue if they're good or bad.

Later, BUZZ

I have used POR-15 Metal Mask and it no way looks like bare metal. It leaves a tough shinny gray coat.

I actually use Plasti-cote cast aluminum engine paint and it looks very close to bare metal and holds up well even when used in high heat situations. Grab a can of all the stuff you think you might want to use and do spray outs to see what matches the closest in your view.

Seymours stainless steel paint will get you close...It also has real stainless material in it to help with corrosion protection...I see alot of dipped/blasted parts being done that look too light colored and unnatural compared to the assembly line parts that were used...Seymours is in the same category it's a touch light but it'll work if you're going the rattle can route....Mist coat or dry spray the last layer to get the desired low gloss look...

Jeff Lilly is a restorer who contributes to restoration magazines and has done research on this topic. He shares his results with good information here:

http://www.jefflilly.com/ > Build Tips > silver paints

He tested 18 different rattle can paints that are supposed to give a bare metal look for cast iron, cast aluminum, bare steel, etc. He says that the kind of light in which the part will be viewed should be the test criteria. A control arm would be viewed in well shaded natural light at a car show. If so, then his choice for bare steel is Seymour Stainless Steel 16-054, photo #18 on the web.

Maybe what is implied is that this paint is too light in direct sunlight but a good match if in the shade.

He also likes Plasti Kote 285 but calls it a cast iron paint.
