Did these things use an external pump so the trans was hydraulicly engauged before engauging the clutch, or did the clutch drive the pump?

Both ways were used.The early cars used a power steering pump and later units had a 3 finger tang to drive the front pump.
Nautilus Racing- We use Superformance gaskets and Turbo Action converters/products.
