Found a '67 Formula S 383 auto fastback car locally in my search for a '67-68 notch back driver. I wasn't really looking for a big block car but lucked into finding one. I have had a few late model '09 & '15 R/T Challengers & wanted to get back into a vintage daily driver again. The old stuff is just way more fun & every drive is an adventure. The barracuda has been off the road & in a shed since '85 & needs engine/tranny/gas tank, wiring, radiator, seats, wheels & brakes. It's very rust fee & has most it's original paint. The bumpers, header panel & front valance are all I need for the body but I am also missing the trunk trim. Brought it home Christmas eve almost a year ago & hope to have it in the road in the next month or so.

The car has some neat old speed parts, old '80s Autometer gauges, a Hurst roll control & some miscellaneous bits like Super Stock Springs, billet U-joint caps, adjustable pinion snubber & a 742 sure grip. I got a '65 383 long block with the car with the drivers front mounting boss. The crank looked good & turned @ 0.010/0.010 & cylinders cleaned up at 0.030. The 727 I got with the car went to Smothers Supercars to go thru it & he add a Transgo kit with the rebuild. The car did come with some new parts too, an Edelbrock Performer RPM, TTI shorty headers w/aluma-coating, Schumacher motor mount brackets w/isolators. Cleaned up the floor pans & got any loose scale & some adhesive from some aftermarket carpeting off. They are super clean & only the passenger front has a rust issue, it as 4 pinholes which will need nothing as soon as I get some POR on them. Luckily there are no extra bucket seat holes & the factory bracing is in place so it wasn't a bench seat car that was converted to buckets. Drivers front has some busted up spot w/metal below which I'm not really sure what happened there.

The 383 block got held up in the machine shop, took about 4 months. Got the block back mid April. Got all the parts to put it together & here are the specs: 383 with a steel crank Forged flat tops Edelbrock E-Street w/75cc chambers Calculates to 9.8:1 compression Comp Cams XE274H Holley 650 Street Avenger Edelbrock Performer RPM Mallory dual point 1 7/8" Hooker full length I decided to go with Headman B-body full length under chassis instead of the shorty headers but that proved to be a

After much searching & trying to decide going with $1000 factory manifolds or the shorty headers, I decided I wanted to get the most out of the motor & decided to cut it for fenderwells. I like the old '70s style & for me I think it will work out fine. I just will keep the replacement panels if I ever change my mind. Kind of felt bad cutting such a nice car.... Have a set of old Hooker 1 7/8" fenderwells to go on it. I cut them on top as small as I could & still make it work, never liked the gaping holes on the top side of the fenderwell. Check out how much undercoating is in the corner.

I had 14x8 cragars that came with the car but decided against the 14" rear wheels because I just couldn't find a tire tall enough to make my 4.10 gears work. I ended up with 15x8 Ansen (new style from American Racing) w/ 275/60R15 & 14x6 ET V w/155R14 up front for header clearance. Nice work. Been thinking about finding something similar myself for a DD. Mallory dual point? Must be an older guy to even know what points are. Before I retired, lots of the younger techs didn't know what points and condenser were. If you haven't already done it, are you going to replace the heater core while all the interior is out? Tim

I like those fenderwell headers on there a lot! Great looking car Thanks, I always liked them but never really wanted them on this real 383 car. I was planning on them going on a '69 /6 Dart with a 440 we have with rusty inner fenders. Nice work. Been thinking about finding something similar myself for a DD. Mallory dual point? Must be an older guy to even know what points are. Before I retired, lots of the younger techs didn't know what points and condenser were. If you haven't already done it, are you going to replace the heater core while all the interior is out? The old, rough original paint cars make nice, stress free drivers. I'm 41, have had several points cars & several articles show there is no hp loss with points. I would rather have it simple than extra wiring & the latest electronics. I wasn't planning on worrying about the heater core till after it is driving. I don't think it will be too hard to pull it out down the road.

Got the old Autometer gauges that were in the car when I got all cleaned up & wired up. Ended up getting a replacement for the Coolant Temp since the mechanical one had the sender broke. The replacement one looks pretty decent with these old ones & isn't too far off. These were stacked on the console & I ended up kind putting them at an angle towards me. Looks better than just all flat. Not one of these actually matches, check out the 4 different bulb sockets...

Got the brakes done & bleed without too many initial leaks, with 23 connections throughout the car it was inevitable. Also got the headers put on for "good" with studs, cut between the tubes & filed the mating surface smooth. Found out the "good" Mr Gasket header gaskets had the end opening about 1/4" off. Got a cheap set of header gaskets & they match up perfectly. Still have to adapt my DEI starter heat shield to fit the bottom of the master cylinder to protect from heat. Got the correct '67 pie tin for the air cleaner. Now if I could find what I did with the battery tray i could get the battery in & get measured up for cables & such. The border collie thinks the car is comfortable & is sleeping even though I was running the grinder & banging things around plus it was about 45* in the garage.

Been hitting it hard, got a Lokar transmission kickdown & it went on pretty good, much better than the stock 3 piece linkage. The transmission end of the cable is kind of close to the shifter linkage adjustment bolt. I am thinking about putting a set-screw in there to make sure it doesn't interfere. I like those fenderwell headers on there a lot! Great looking car It couldn't hurt to build a heat shield for the master cylinder. Need to get a taller throttle cable bracket but for now I added a piece of another bracket to make it reach a little closer & get it hooked up to the carb. Also got the starter heat shield adapted to protect the master cylinder.

Few weeks ago, I spent Saturday the morning getting all the fluids put in the car & the battery charged up to get ready to fire it up & break in the cam. Got the cam broke in but had a bad oil leak which turned out to be me putting the rear main seal in backwards just on the cap 1/2. Pulled it back out to address the rear main seal, didn't think the 1st oil change would be done in this fashion.

Its running but now it's got a slight water leak which I followed up to be a cracked block I'll be pulling the motor at later, I put straight water in for now & it's just barely got a drip. The machine shop I used does the stitching technique for repairs like that & I'll be doing that to it. This is the style repair I'll have done. http://r-f.com/lock_n_stitch_repair.asp

Too bad the new a-arm bushings that were already in the car are standard bushings. I need the offset bushings to try & get positive caster & with me having the higher front end ride height I need all the offset I can get. The thing does have all new frontend parts in guessing from the when they reshot the under undercarriage.

Took the Barracuda out & about around town this past Saturday just tinkering with the timing, trans shift points & carb. It's running really good, pulls good and all. But after checking out stuff tonight it seems my crack has grown. I'm going to take my other 383 I have up to the machine shop Monday & just have him prep it & I will just swap all my stuff out & into it. Little dirt road to the shop. I cleaned the old crack with brake kleen 2 weeks ago to get all the blue engine paint off then since it pretty much is non-visible as bare metal I used a white paint pen to outline it. Seems the whole side of the block was weak from a water freeze at some point in the past. Glad I decided to drive it a little before pulling it & getting it repaired.
