78 Dodge D-250, 4 wheel drive, 318 4-speed.
The 318 seized up and I am going to install a 400.
I have the proper truck big block bell housing.
I've never messed with or owned a 4-speed vehicle before; only automatics.
1) Do I need to get a different fly wheel or will the one on the 318 transfer over?
2) Don't I have to make sure the crank has a hole drilled for a bushing?
3) If "yes" to question 2, can that be done with the engine assembled?

Thanks in advance!

both use 143 tooth flywheels so you are ok there. If the 400 has a cast crank you will have to get the flywheel rebalance for the correct external balance. On the pilot bearing/bushing, no issue, just shorten the input shaft and use the magnum style that fits in the torque converter hub. If it is a steel crank 400 you won't have any problems at all and can use the flywheel as is.

So will the clutch and pressure plate transfer over with the flywheel as well?

Steel crank 400 ?

Even though steel cranks weren't used in every 400 like '70-earlier 383's, they were still used in most/all 400 manual transmission applications including trucks up to the end in '78.

I'm pretty sure it's a cast crank if I remember correctly what the harmonic balancer looks like; do I need to take the balancer to the machine shop as well or just let them know it's a cast 440 (if thats what it is)????

I have owned 3 forged crank big blocks built all built after 1974. 2 stick, one auto.

I have seen 2 more in a junk yard. (75 W250, 4X4 stick and a cube van with an auto)

I used to care but....... things have changed

I could have sworn that the 400, and NP435 4 speed trans combo used a bigger flywheel...Like a 12"??? Friend of mine has that flywheel and bell housing, I'll have to ask him.

BB trucks use the 143 tooth wheel. Heres the 400 cast crank wheel.

He is 100% sure that its a 12" clutch, and has more than 143 teeth.

Are you using an NP435 trans or an 833 in your truck?

I'm going to "GUESS" the NP435 because I had to get the "truck" bellhousing and not the car bellhousing. Is there a way to tell by crawling under the truck and looking?

I've never seen a 172 tooth wheel in a pickup. I've had around 10 BB 4-spd pickups and all had the 143 tooth. I do have a 172 tooth wheel from an industial 440 pump.
Heres the truck bell housing #3487272 with the 143 tooth wheel.

Where is your shifter located in relationship to the transmission tunnel? Right in the middle is the NP435. Way on the drivers side is the 833. 435 has a granny low, 833 is usually an overdrive.

Shifter is center of tunnel. I crawled underneath and there are no shifter arms or linkage on the side - it's all on top.
