Getting the pilot Formula S ready for MCACN and looked at the original block. It is cracked so a replacement is in the car until I can get the numbers block fixed. Anyhow, there is a plate welded over the place where the vin is stamped. That plate is stamped with the vin. The engine was assembled June 13 1968. I would love to see what is under that plate. Anyone seen this before?

very strange. Possible a replacement block and dealership "transferred" stampings. Wow, super low serial number.

Never seen that. Looks like there is not a machined surface behind it.

Cool to see.

Can you get overall pics of both block sides?

A clear shot of the VIN on the transmission would be great to.

I have not seen one like that, but with a pre-production/pilot/first day of production, or otherwise "oddball" car, anything is possible.

Barry, Here are the block shots. Trans can't be done. There are headers on the car and they prevent a good shot. The numbers are and as spaced: 28 92089 2440.

can you tell if the VIN stamped piece is cast? hardness test?

it looks like someone took the VIN stamped piece of the original block, machined & ground it down to fit the proper area then brazed it to another block.

based on the dates it could've been done early in the car's life, possibly before it left Chrysler

I have had a few 6-22-67 340 blocks, that must be the initial casting date? shruggy For sure it wouldn't have the machined pad, that didn't start until 1969. I have never seen a numbers 69 block using that early casting date. Dan it probably right. twocents

Looks to me like they had an early cast block that did not have the raised pad by the pan rail so the grabbed a piece of flat stock, stamped it and welded it in place. Looks like sometime Chrysler would have done to me b

Looking at the first two photos, I do not see room for a VIN pad underneath the plate, the pad does stick out.

Can you get a clear, close up photo from the bottom that would show any gap (or none) behind the plate ?

What I see is that it sits on the block.

Check the top of the bellhousing flange near for any stamped numbers also just for fun.

Give the pad a cleaning with a rust remover also.

It is a blurry image but I do not see the normal cutter swirls on the face of the plate that would support the 'removed from another block theory', but a cleaner pad would tell the tale.

So clean it up & get a clear closeup please?

It is just a piece of flat stock. It does not look like there is the raised area under it either.
