What kind of mileage does it do now (empty on highway)?

Always heard the Smarty was a great tuner for the commonrail trucks.

Get about 13.5 to 14.5 It's a 2wd Yep, that's about right for a common-rail Cummins, thanks for your honesty. I used an Edge 60hp on my '02 with 3.54's and it brought my mileage up about 1.5. I could get 17mpg if I kept it at 60mph but 16mpg was more average. I paid around $300.00 for mine new but you regularly see them in classifieds for $100.00 Just understand that everything from '03 and up the mileage took a dump for two reasons: 1. Injecting more fuel for the common-rail pre-injection event 2. The ridiculous idea to go to 3.73 gears. Diesels hate rpm and it robs fuel mileage.

Tuners are overrated in the improved mileage department. They will make the lie-o-meter read higher but actually don't usually help much. Some, in fact hurt fuel mileage. I would stay away from anything that plugs into fuel rail pressure sensor and fools the ECM to raising the rail pressure. They are rough on the injectors which already have reliability issues to begin with. I'd recommend a GOOD set of injector nozzles around the 50 hp range to help efficiency and add a little power instead.

Finding out the hard way that a common-rail Cummins won't do 26mpg? Welcome to the real world. Send out cash offers to purchase the trucks of the Delusional Morons on here who claim theirs' do: they seem awful quiet on this thread of yours, but I assure you: they do exist. Big tires, leveling kits, 3.73 gears you name it: they get PHENOMONAL fuel mileage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And the Dealers offer them unbelievable cash offers!!!!! Sure. It's just me that gets 17mpg out of a Cummins at 60 mph. Everyone else gets 10mpg better than I do. About your Edge experience: I find it hard to believe you paid, ordered, recieved/installed AND made 1300 miles in 3 days (by above post count). I call BS unless you can provide proof. So, how about it? Got proof?

The overhead console mileage never did match my hand-calculated. Are you afraid to speak your experience when the 25mpg Cummins rears its' ugly head?!?!??!? What is wrong with you, Man?

I'm not afraid of anything Grizzly. I have been working on these trucks since their inception. Not only do I work on them, I own and drive them. I have customers that make outrageous fuel mileage claims (close to 30 mpg) and I just shake my head. Most trucks daily driven will get somewhere in the 12 to 17 mpg range depending on how they are equipped. A 2wd manual truck will yield the best mileage whereas a 4x4 QC auto dually is at the bottom of the list. Put on oversized tires, hay bed, fuel storage tank, and a cow pusher on the front and you will be lucky to see double digits.

Is that 13.8 mpg pulling a 30' enclosed trailer?

Okay you did the miles. 4.10's There's your problem. These things are not meant to be wound up to 2200rpm If you have the patience, run out on the highway on a flat stretch for 50mph and reset your av. mileage. Go for 20 miles. Do the same thing at 75mph and see how big the difference is. If you like what you see at 50mph you can either switch to 3.08 gears or convert to 22.5 Semi rims. The closer you are to 1400rpm at your usual cruising speed the better. You always have 3rd gear for pulling heavy (should be about 2400rpm w/ 3.08's) You're a lucky guy if you do the gear swap (2wd vs 4).

What makes the commonrail so much less fuel efficient than the earlier trucks?

The extra fueling events of a common rail for noise (pilot injection) and emissions (after injection) hurt mileage.

What makes the commonrail so much less fuel efficient than the earlier trucks? The reason has already been stated in post #5, see above.
