I am teasing a Pontiac guy at the job about this car. Do you know the engine combo? Thanks!

400, D-port heads, 4 speed.
Q-jet, iron intake, .421 lift hyd cam.

I find it inspiring how well some of these old school combos run with basic stuff.
The motor he was running that weekend is unbelievably basic.
Trw pistons and still has regular 5/64 rings in it.

Best that weekend was 10.73 @ 124.4, 3450lbs.

He uses that stuff because the rules say so. Plenty of new school tech and tricks to make it run like that.

Indeed. That's why I ask. NHRA stock rules are tough.

I went to dinner with my friend who has the Firebird last night and mentioned that comment.

We got a good chuckle out of it.

The only "trick" part in that motor is the Schubeck lifters.

Many of the mid-pack old school stocker combos are prime examples of just how important getting the combination sorted out is.

So this man has been racing 4 speed Pontiac GTO and Firebirds in stock eliminator for over a dozen years .600-.991under the index cars yarding the tires 3 feet in the air, and nothing special done to his cars? Now I'm getting a good chuckle.

I have great respect for the people in stock and the amount of work and money put into the cars.

If it was easy to go .990 under everyone would do it.

The "car" has some nice stuff in it. Trans, clutch, suspension, etc.

But the motor in the car at the Dutch is the spare motor, and there is no modern high tech stuff in that one.

When he first started racing in Stock, after a few years of bracket racing, we put a stocker motor together and stuck it in the car(the gto). It was an auto back then.
It wouldn't even run the index at first.

We got to be a little friendly with some of the other guys running Stock and picked their brains for what we were missing.
One guy, who was racing a 68 396 Camaro running well under the index told us, "ya know...... When I freshen my motor, I look at the stuff inside and think to myself, 'I don't know why this thing runs this good".
We thought that guy was just lying out if his a$$.
Then....... Once we got the car to come around and running better we realized he was telling the truth. Once you figure out the combo...... It's not that hard.

A guy who has been around class racing quite a while, and has done several pretty good running combos told me, "cam, carb, converter". In our case that's "cam, carb, clutch".
Proper basic machining practices along with a decent car and "the 3 c's", and it will run pretty dang good....... Without any tricks.

Like Tom Hoover said about the AH (then AA) cars back in the '90's- "if you're not going 150, you're not doing your homework") Class racing is constantly evolving IMHO. They're knocking on 160 now.
