Just a followup to this thread....

Now when I build the big Block mopars I always make sure that when I install the the rear main seal on the retainer/cap, the rear main seal ends have to protrude past the retainer/cap at least 0.010 - 0.015

IF THEY DONT, I JUST MILL THE RETAINER/CAP WHATEVER IS NEEDED.

if the cap bottoms out before the seals ends meet, you WILL have a rear main leak. If the seal ends slightly protrude the machined surface of the main seal cap.....NO LEAKS!!

WORKS EVERY TIME. NOT A DROP-

Mine are all leak free when ran NA.
Then I add nitrous and they leak, especially from the rear main seal!!

Domingo’s advice above is sound. I’m not a builder, but I’ve assembled a few over the years and I’ve never had a rear main leak. Both times my current 400/451 have gone together I’ve used the standard FelPro rear main with the rubber crank seals and pipe-cleaner & RTV side seals. The current assembly was 6 years ago. Not a drop of leakage.
I think the crank has a lot to do with it; I have no documentation, but believe the score-marks on the crank are an important component. If they’re worn out or your machinist disturbed them, could be trouble....
