Hey guys, I'm looking at buying some used moser axles out of a challenger and putting them in my 67 charger.
1. What do you think about lathing them down, and how much, or how do you determine what the proper length should be.
2. I have stock axles/bearings with suregrip and buttons. These have green bearings so do you just leave the buttons in and have the axles out far enough that they don't touch the buttons?

According to the Tech Archives, axle lengths 8 3/4, a 65-67 B Body axle is 28 7/8" and an E Body is 29 31/32". This makes an E Body axle 1 3/32" longer. I don't think the buttons are as long, so leaving them out still wouldn't help. You could cut the axles down, or better yet, get a spool. Most spools are splined right through, so there maybe enough room. You really need a spool anyway...

Thanks Bob. So an inch and 3/32s eh? I was staying away from the spool for now, I'm still spending cash in other areas to prepare for next season. But since factory GM axles fail, I guess nhra deems it necessary for everyone else to support the after market axle industry . I don't like the rule, as there are no real specs or parameters other than "aftermarket"....whatever that means. I guess I was just curious as to how much clearance to run between the buttons and the green bearinged axles...

You don't think Mopar axles fail?

My car is a lot slower than yours and I twisted the end right off a stock axle, you need good axles, actually you and I both need a Dana

Your other choice is to take the housing as well. Its a little wider, but I don't think it would be noticeable. Bob

Well if the axle is 1 1/32 wider , thats times 2 and his car doesn't have big wheels to begin with .

Unless the axles are a smoking deal I would not bother , if you cut that much off you'll need that much more spline

Bob.....? The Charger should et better than that car did ...as we saw it last year anyway . The longer housing deal won't work, Its too long as it is. But from what I understand, the moser axles have lots of extra spline on them, Bert said he figures his have like 4". If that were the case, I'd think there would be enough left over to cut off. I guess I'd have to put them side by side to see.

if there is that much spline then you should be able to cut them to the length you need , ditch the buttons

yea, that thing was a beauty You should be able to cut the axles down if you have four inches of spline. They're 30 spline, right? Bob
