a friend of mine picked up what he was told was a 413 short block from a motor home
it is a complete short block except for a ballancer
it has what looks like a 72 casting date....
it has "HT 413" on the id pad
so the questions are.
would this be a forged or cast crank?
how do we tell?
can 440 stuff be used on it(heads and intakes)
I know the 413 Motor home heads and exaust look to be different...
did they still make the 413 in 72-73?
is this short block worth anything? shruggy
or is just the crank usefull?

thanks in advance. Ron... up

You can use 440 parts on the 413. A pull of the oil pan will tell you if it's a forged crank, which it probably is.

Yes they made the 413 that late for motorhomes and also for other industrial uses. I had a 413 that was from a road grader.

Pistons are probably in the 8.0 compression area, but you can fix that if desired.Rods should be the same as a 440 - LY type

I've owned a couple of 413's and with decent compression they will run strong. I think most all of the 413's were forged cranks, even the industrial and motor home engines. The factory used them as a workhorse motor for years, not to mention that they were used by many racers in the 60's

All the industrial 361-3 and 413-3 blocks in trucks and motorhomes I've seen and heard of have the two bosses on the rear of the block that look like the front water pump bosses but not machined scope They had a better forged steel crank and rods in them than the regular light duty passenger cars and light trucks and vans had up I'll bet money that the compression ratio was around 7.5 to 1 or lower with real thick piston tops, perfect for a turbo or blower devil

I'll go out on a limb here and say no 413s left the factory with a cast crank. None. Up to their last year in passenger cars, 1965, there were no cast Chrysler cranks, period. The 413s that were built after 1965 were all heavy duty in some respect and Chrysler was very good about using forged cranks in their heavy duty engines.

In the last years some 440s escaped the factory with cast cranks and made their way into motor homes, but Chrysler had decided no more bigblocks at that time and was cleaning house.

The comp ratio will be really low, as Cab said. All 440 parts are usable except pistons and rings. Anything that works on a 440 will work on a 413.

Back when you could buy new standard 383 pistons for $100 on Ebay I proposed a 472 stroker using 413 block bored to 4.25, and a 4.25 crank. The 383 pistons were just the right compression height.

Nowadays that doesn't make sense and I'd suggest getting custom pistons for any 413 application.

A 413 will respond just like any engine to all the hot rodding tricks. Maximum power will be limited because of displacement and bore size, but most times it is more important to get a project on the road than it is to build max power. I believe there are plenty of max power engines sitting in garages waiting for the rest of the car to be finished.

Back in the day when smallblocks were 327 and lower, a 413 was a pretty hot number. Hot Rod Magazine put one in a D100 and ran 12s.

Put a blower on it and push 6 lbs. It will last forever, and have a lot of power. Also it probably has 6 pack type rods.

It was probally never was a thought on Mopars part to put 6 pak rods in a HD industrial motor, they wouldn't rev over 4500 RPM so why bother work
