Here is the pic of a 350 olds head my brother filled with the zinc alloy. This is right after it was done and the excess zinc still needs to be blended back to match the rest of the bowl shape with a porting bit.

This is probably the best way to do this job as it makes the exhaust flow better thru those two ports. If I had the heads off and more time/foresight, i would have rather done it this way.

Well Steve.

According to some, your personal heat riser port should be blocked with a ballgag and duct tape!

i actually considered doing that as well. but I could look down the heat riser port and see the valve stem (at least I think I saw it). at that point, I thought ya, how would a piece of aluminum foil stuck between the valve and the valve seat do me? Or worse, a ball of aluminum falling into a cylinder as the engine is off, then bouncing around the cylinder until is flattens enough to be spit out.

Or get caught in the rings and score a cylinder. Not worth the risk.

nope, it definitely isnt worth that destruction.

The manifold is at the shop today. I'll post the final pics when I get it back on friday

Its going to run way better having that heat blocked off. Modern fuels percolate way too easy to be running a hot manifold. And the whole engine will run cooler too. Lower under hood temps, more power, easier on the hoses and wires, its all good.

Cool.

Let us know how it runs.

That turned out great. How does the manifold fit?

the manifold fits like a dream. no problems whatsoever installing it. I used the Ultra Black silicon and that stuff works really well. nice and squishy when it cures too.

I started it up yesterday and it sounded really good. but I broke the nipple on the pcv valve. i need to pick up a new one today. i warmed it up and stuck a thermometer on the intake and measured about 125 degrees F there

Should run a whole lot better now.

i wen for a ride today. it was between 45 and 50 outside.

it ran really good.

i never heard gas gurgling like i used to so its so far so good. the manifold stayed warm but not hot. before it was so hot the paint was turning brown.

So I hate to revise and old thread but this has come back to haunt me. Apparently (as you can see from the picture of the milled manifold), the weld job on the blockoff plate I had welded into the manifold was piss poor and resulted in the plate being dislodged and sucked into the #5 cylinder where it bounced around and wadded up.

I heard a ting dingaling sound coming from the motor the other day and I tore it down to find 3 separate pieces of destroyed aluminum in the #5 cylinder. There was no real damage so I cleaned it up and Im putting it back together.

this time I'll use the intake manifold withe the steel shims instead of a welded in plate

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

Hey Steve , long time ...

It was a crappy weld job, you can see where weld was removed when the manifold was surfaced. I guess it must have come loose and fell into the cylinder while the engine was turned off and that valve was open , that's a tough one.

running up my post count some more .

You could have a small recessed area machined around the port. Then the weld would be below the surface. It wouldn't get milled off that way.

Did you still use the heat block off gasket or just the standard one?

Hey Johnrr! how ya doing! LTNS!! Ive been enjoying the crap out of my hellcat so I havent been around here much.

As for my issue, I can see the crack in the weld. I saw it before but figured it was good enough. I was wrong.

As for milling out a recessed area- ya that would have worked but I figured the weld was good enough. I used the standard Fel Pro gasket that was open to the cross over port. Im still in tear down mode. I changed out the head gasket on that one side (drivers) with a Mr. Gasket 1121 (not the 1121G but the older white style) and since this is a .028" thick gasket replacing the Fel pro 1008 (.042" thick), I'll have to remove the passenger side head and replace that gasket as well.

I bought the mopar P4186569 intake gasket with the steel block off plate for the rebuild

I tried the aluminum foil years ago. One day I start it up and the exhaust is blowing all this black little pieces of "stuff" You could write your name on the floor with it. It was the aluminum foil blowing out.

ya theres no way balled up aluminum foil is going to work.. the exhaust is too hot and it will make quick work of that foil spitting it out in chunks.

The MP gasket I bought with the stainless blockoff plates came with no instructions and I seriously doubt i will get a good seal on the intake with these two thick metal plates placed in the middle of the head on the gasket. I would think youd need to have the gasket milled out to recieve the plates so when its all buttoned up, it fits in tight and almost flat.

who has used these blockoff plates?? How did you install them? did the gasket leak?
