Has anyone done this? If so any pictures. I talked to a buddy about doing the swap for me. He asked if anyone had done it yet. I know guys have done it on 61-71 sweptlines but I haven't seen 72 and up. I don't mind being the guinea pig.

The CV is wider than the frame rails by about 4-5"

One guy with a square body Chevy sectioned the aluminum cradle by 5" and used a Mustang rack, but that seems like a lot of work to me. (He abandoned the project later, saying the frame was bent)

I am getting ready to swap a CV under a '78 Ramcharger to swap it to 2wd, because 2wd poptop frames are difficult to find, and I want it lower than a stock 2wd RC without the hassle of cutting a crossmember out of a 2wd truck, taking the one out of my RC, grafting it all together again with Dak spindles and either my Chisolm or van LCAs.

But I really don't see the point of the CV swap if you already have an IFS 2wd truck.

I was thinking the same thing. If all you want is R&P steering, adapt it in from a newer Dodge truck.

The 5.25 bolt pattern is easy to accomplish, if that's another reason.

i have seen 2 crown vic swaps where the entire frame was used along with IFS and axle----under a 62 ford unibody and a 66 ford truck---looks very tidy---and you can find the whole car for under $900....

It is easier to just swap the cross member under a Ford pickup. As close to a bolt in as it gets.

Here is my buddy's 1961 Uni with a CV swap.

I know they have put them on Ford's. And I didn't ask if I should do it or not. The complaints about using drop spindles with or without van LCA's, is it seems that guys are still getting bump steer with this application. I want to avoid this and install a better suspension.

And back to the original question. Has anyone or know of anyone that has done this on a 72-93 D150?

And Minivan...Thank you!

Good luck.

I told you the frame is too narrow. I also told you what was tried with a Chevy (which has the same width frame as our trucks)

You also know this is a conversation, not just a place where you control what is said. My reply was in response to a full CV frame swap under an Uni.

I have never done this and have no personal knowledge of anyone that has done it. OK, that's out of the way.

IF (and I say IF) the 72-93 D150 is 28" outside to outside on the front frame rails, there is a narrowed Crown Vic cross member available with a steering rack:

http://ritcheytrucksuspension.com/products/crown-vic-ifs-2003-2011-cross-member-narrow-4-34-inches

Stock Crown Vic cross member is about 35.5" between the shock towers. Take out 4 3\4" brings it down to around 30". That might work for you.

Greg

I neither have any dogs in this hunt. Seems to me the easiest way would be to put spacers between the CV uprights and the Ram frame. Certainly easier than cutting and welding the aluminum casting. That's what makes the swap so successful, it's close to a bolt-in in some vehicles. So make the frame fit the crossmember. It sounds like a good idea to me, also easier than swapping an entire frame out of a passcar.

The bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5".

I would think you have to remove the truck's original truck front crossmember to put the Crown Vick crossmember in. Both can't occupy the same location, and if they miss each other, an oil pan sump still has to fit in there someplace. If you need to remove the original crossmember, adding whatever you need to the width of the Dodge frame so you can bolt on the CV crossmember should be a cakewalk.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but its not my stuff, and I have for sure been involved with vehicle alterations that didn't make much sense before or after it was done. Carry on, and post up a build with pictures. Gene

What's the track width of the CV front end vs the truck? If it's close or the same as is I'd go with the spacer idea to make up the difference

Good point, Poorboy, and yes the humongous crossmember has to come out.
