Need to restore the wood on my Rallye dash. Which is better, easier to do, buy the wood grain with the metal backing or just the decal and cover the old one? Who sells the best looking repos.
Thanks,
Howard

I struggled with the same thing and ended up with the ones that BE/A and PG Classics sells. They are VERY nice. Yep, they are expensive, but nothing else compares to how nice they are.
I say give Mike a call if you can afford 'em.

I have the reproduction woodgrain bezels many sell (PG Classic/BEA /RTE...)and unless they changed them to make them more correct, I would give them a 7.5 out of 10. The ones I have are very shiney and lack some of the detail of the originals and the anadized part around the outside edge is a tad thicker and the color is off from my originals. Some ot these issues may have been improved by now (got mine from the first run)so I would call Mike at BEA parts as he is likely to have the best set avail. What I did was to use the overlay from Detroit Muscle Tech but to get these overlays to look perfect requires some prep work, patience and skill but when finished correctly, they look very good IMHO. I will try to post a pic when I get a chance today.
I'm confused with what you have. The repros I bought are the metal silkscreened ones; there is no anodized part around the outside edge. On the originals, there is the chrome plastic edging, but that is a separate pce from the woodgrain.
I know somebody (PG?) was making plastic 1pc repros at one point, is that what you bought?

I was looking the AB&E website at please correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me like the woodgrain is an overlay. Is that how they were from the factory. Woodgrain over the black pebble? If so? Than my overlay maybe okay? KID
That's how they did it. I had bought a dash from a 69 Charger SE years ago for a BEE project and didn't want the woodgrain. When I looked into removing it, I found that I couldn't without replacing the pebble grain parts, there was a panel that was added over the pebble grain. They cut holes in the plastic pebble grain parts and installed a metal panel that had taps going through the holes and bent over to secure the woodgrain panels.
The factory method was an overlay, but the 'woodgrain' portion is a very delicate piece of aluminum. To add the woodgrain to a pebblegrain dash you also would need the steel portion that contains the tabs mentioned above. In other words the woodgrain is a sandwich of the steel (with tabs) mount plate, which provides a surface to glue the aluminum woodgrain plate to. I can take photos if clarification is needed. (read that I didn't describe it well enough)

Like the others have said, the factory ones consisted of a silkscreened aluminum panel attached to what appears to be galanized steel with tabs. They were then attached to the pebble grain bezels through holes in the bezels which you bend the tabs over.
The stuff BE&A sells is just like the factory stuff in how it goes together.
Unfortunately, what that all means is that you need to buy the woodgrain AND the plastic bezels unless your originals have good enough chrome on them. Refinishing the original bezels (in my experience) cost as much or more than buying the new plastic ones.
Oh, and the only other thing to mention is the repop plastic bezels will need to be cut for the woodgrain tabs.
