Can anyone tell me if the valve body from a 1997 46re will work in a 2001 46re trans? I know the electronics are different and need to be switched. I have heard conflicting awnsers on this. One person said yes it will work and the local trans shop stated it might but the transfer plate and check balls are different so they can not be sure. Thanks

The 01 trans has the 3 pin safety switch and not the large box one as I read that does matter

Both of them should have the eight wire plug on the drivers side also as they are both electronic gov trans. They may be the same as I dont remember if there was any running changes in them from 1997 to 2001 but basically they are the same trans. Not sure what you mean about the large box one ? Maybe you mean a 45RFE which was behind the Hemi's. If anyone knows about the 97 V/B working in the 2001 John Kunkel most likely will. You are sure both are 46RE tranny's right ? Ron

Yes both are 46re trans. What I mean by that is around mid year 2001 and later they started to use a 5 pin neutral safety switch instead of the older 3 pin.

They should both have the eight wire plug on the drivers side that points up as thats for the gov press sensor , gov solenoid , trans fluid temp , lock-up and overdrive. The only ones I remember with a 5 pin connector at the NSS instead of the 3 pin switch was the ones that used a Range Sensor for the electronic reading in the dash. But its been a long time since I worked on one and my memeory may be a little fuzzy on it. I would need to look at the wiring diagram to be sure. Ron

You would need to leave whichever neutral safety switch the truck has in place.

The neutral safety is activated my the rooster comb on the valve body (the part the linkage activates and the park rod connects too) , look at the 2 of them , if they are different just swap the part needed from the original to the donor .

running up my post count some more .

The governor pressure transducer is different. The pre-2000 was a metal can type 4 pin, the 2000 and later is a plastic one with blade connector. Mix them up and you have issues - the remainder of the valve body is essentially the same - make sure you match the filter and pan - they changed over the years.

Look at this web site. The valve body is slightly different mainly where the front pump area is . Some have a large or small area
