Hi!

I was wondering if the textured argent silver on a 71 cuda grille woulf be the same shade as on a 70 cuda grille?

I am going to painting my 71 Cuda grille textured argent in the near future. I have chosen to use the Roger Gibson kit which is supplied as 3 different products to be sprayed one on top of the other to get the effect.

I called Roger a couple weeks back because I had some questions on the directions supplied with the kit. I must say he was very helpful as I did learn very much from him including what he has found to be the difference between 70 and 71 texture.

As I said the kit is supplied as 3 different products, all lacquer. The #1 is a highly textured essentially silver/argent paint. The #2 is a clear with some metalflakes mixed in. The #3 is a straight clear which he likes to use to glue the texture down somewhat. What Roger told me for a 71 grille is to just use just #1 and #3. He said a lot of the 70 grilles he has seen have somewhat of a shimmer to them and this is why he includes #2 can.

I did take a little bit of the number #1 from the can and put it on a piece of plastic and compared it to some 71 grilles, headlight rings, and lower grilles I have, some NOS and I will say it matches them very close to almost identical in both color and texture.

Thanks a lot for the reply!!!

I compared an old weathered 71 cuda grille vs another old 70 grille I have and they look to be very similar....still they are really old sun baked grilles, so I cant tell for sure....

But yes, from what I recall I kinda always thought that the 70 grilles were either a bit lighter gray or maybe as you say got a lil bit more shimmer on them.

...But most people just told me both years are the same shade....

I tried the Rattle Can Dark Argent which is supposed to be correct for the 71 and 70 cuda grille and it is defintely not accurate. Texture is a little less coarse, and its also quite darker than my NOS 71 cuda grille I had to compare with.

However, I took the pressurized paints out of the Rattle can and I mixed it with some synthetic enamel silver paint, and also added some ochre and blue IIRC and I was able to lighten it some to make it match to my NOS 71 Cuda grille and I can say I was pretty happy with the results. I will try and post some pics.

Very nice work. I hope mine turns out this well.

Do you know if your NOS grille is an excess production line piece or and over the counter dealer piece? The reason I ask has to do with the black out where the grille textures attach.

I have (4) grilles I'm looking at right now as reference (2) are original to my cars and (2) were replacements bought from dealers. The replacements don't have the blackout while the production line parts do. Also the texture retainers on the replacements are round while the one on the production line pieces are rectangular.

Just gee whiz I used Mopar light argent from year one and found I had to mist it with silver wheel paint, it almost appeared green to me. Here is one center cap already misted over in silver and the other freshly painted in just the argent.

could I ask -
how much did you reduce the paint from yearOne?
and did you shake/stir it for a real good bit, before reducing and spraying?

I have used that paint before, and never had it come out with that shade etc...

I had it put in spray cans at a local Napa and I think I shook it good. So I'm not sure what they did to it. It looked OK on the cans lid. Maybe they didn't shaker the can before they worked with it?

Okay, I'll bite. What is your answer? Whatever it is it looks pretty good.

up For the reply. Now for a problem; I finally found the Planet Color website and the closest textured color I can find is the PCRC18 here.

What am I missing??

It might take a call to inquire. That looks very much like it as well. They will tolerate wax BTW unlike the original.

For Organosol I used rustoleum TEXTURED BLACK. I take it out of the rattle can and spray it with a gun. Then I clear coat it with Glasurit Matte clearcoat. It looks awesome and its washable and wont stain.

I wonder if they messed up a bit, the gm argent has the green aspect to it 68-74, like used on the older vette rims.

All these rattle can and repops look good until you crack open a can of the org. oem nos paints and use the old style spray gun then reality sets in that its only close.

I hardly open the old junk anymore, my lungs want to lock up in short order.

Nothing pops like the original, but I do understand why the pro-s, even if they had it couldnt sell it probably because its been banned for so long from the epa.

Ive still nearly 3 gallons but I still cheat at times to save paint, I will use a silver first base coat but still of the old school 60/70-s laq then the text. topcoat.

But this is straight from the can, with a little laq to reduce.

I shot this with my bubble because I knew id have a bit extra.
