Looking to run the Hughes Whiplash cam, in the 383.

Hughes recommends their valve springs:

Installed Height/Pressure: 1.880"--150#
Pressure @ .450" lift: 315#
Pressure @ .500" lift: 325#
Pressure @ .550" lift: 335#
Pressure @ .600" lift: 350#
Pressure @ .650" lift: 365#
Coil Bind: .680" lift
Outer Spring ID/OD: 1.130"/1.540"
Type of Spring: Single w/ damper

I know almost nothing about valve springs, how do these compare to stock? Is there another brand spring you guys might recommend that wont have the Hughes price tag?

I'm building on a budget, so if I can find a comparable spring for less than the $92 I would like to see what is available. I dont know if $92 is a decent price or not.

Ron dont know the specs but I run Comps in my 440.I would have to look at the box to see what set they are.Comp solid cam is .588 320 duration.Been in for about 16 years and no problems. We ran my old Isky springs in the 413 when Jesse ran the Huges cam. They were like 35 years old and worked better than new.Rocky

OK, Would you happen to have a part number, or other brand equivalent?

Im really at a loss trying to spec them out, and Summit no longer offers a by engine search on valve springs, (and piston rings by the way) you need to supply all the diameters inner, outer, height, coil bind, pressure, etc. And its kinda all Greek to me.

Thanks for the assistance.

I will be running the stock 1.5 rocker, unless there is a deal on a 1.6 ration rocker out there.

I like it way better with a 1.6 rocker.

The springs are on the high side of pressure. Better have your poop wired tight when firing the engine.

You are within less than 1% of what I'm using.

Have you seen what they charge for the 1.6 rockers? I dont think I want to trust a china made set, and the next level are over $700 for the Crane.

And just to take this way off topic, I was thinking of running a 1/2 grooved rod bearing, because I do plan to spray the motor, but with steel rods, and bearings with dowel pin holes, do I need to pin the rods, or can the hole just ride as is?

Under $500 for USA stuff, and they've seemed fine for flat tappet spring pressures. S/F....Ken M

The stock rocker is not going to like those spring pressures. The pushrod will pop a hole in it. The stock pushrods aren't going to like it either. I'd look for a set of used ductile iron rockers as a cheap upgrade. Also some decent pushrods

I already have a set of hardened pushrods.

And are the Mopar Performance stamped rockers any different that the OEM?

They were on my previous 383 that had the 292/509 cam, and stiffer springs, they dont show any funky wear.

Just order some PRW stainless steel 1.6 rockers and be done with it. You can also find good used rockers for sale all the time.

You want to build a nice piece and use a junk rocker. What gives? Don't step over donuts to pick up dog turds.

Thanks for the tip on the PRW rockers. I just scored a set new for $375.

I never said I wanted to use a junk rocker. Just wasn't having luck finding a good one I could afford.
