Been driving my /6 Swinger around and noticed an oil leak occuring behind where the intake and exhaust mates together. Its coming from that general area, just a little higher up

Im assuming its either the intake gasket or the head gasket leaking.

If it is the head gasket leaking, whats the worst that can occur if the vehicle is continously driven like this, other than the oil seepage?

I had a oil leak out of my head gasket on my 273 for about a year before the headgaskets let out.

Granted when it went i was reving her help to 6000 playing around then the nest day i start her up and coolant poored out of the head gasket area.

It could go many miles before the head gasket let out but it is a game of chance and a sign it needs to be replaced.

Well it can't be an intake gasket on a /6 for one thing.
Maker sure that it isn't a valve cover gasket seaping. Head gaskets rarely will leak oil.

I really cant see how the leak could be coming from the Valve cover gasket . Up top near where the valve cover fastens to the head is dry,as is the ledge next to it. The engine is slanted the opposite way of the leak as well,so I think if the leak was coming from the valve cover it would be very noticeable. The leak is coming from somewhere under the mounting area of the inake/Exhaust to the cylinder head as seen in the pic attached(Reference the red arrow)

The pushrods are on the other side so the head gasket shouldn't have oil in that area...I haven't been able to find a good schematic of the oil gallery, it's possible that it's in that area but I thunk it's near the back of the engine... Maybe mention \6 in the thread title to draw in the guys that know the engine better...

There should not be any oil on that side of the head gasket, but I have seen weirder things. Make sure it's not the valve cover gasket leaking and wicking down. The valve cover looks like it may be leaking toward the rear.

How much oil is the motor using? I would not be overly concerned unless it uses enough that you might run it out.

Valve cover gaskets are cheap, and /'s are notorious for leaking, worth a try.

I can't believe saying that there is no oil on that side of the head under the covers. With the engine running even at idle the oil is all over under that coner. Don't believe me? Take that cover off and run it.

By any chance is the intake/exhaust gasket leaking? I have seen stains like that from goo leaking out the exhaust side of the gasket.

I asked the same thing. I am not sure if its an intake gasket or Head gasket leaking but...

Well, techinically no, there is no oil sealed by the gasket. However, I have seen stains like that from leaking exhaust and even intake ports. The exhaust side leaks a mixture of oil/carbon/condensation/unburnt gas and the intake side will leak a mixture of gas/oil/carbon.

Don't be afraid even if it is a head gasket. Changing gaskets on a Slant looks intimidating, but it ain't brain surgery. Biggest thing to do is before you start soak all the manifold nuts with PB Blaster for a few days. It will make life a lot easier.

And have alot of fun when you split the intake and exhaust manifolds. your kids may learn alot of new words.

But the splitting isn't even the worse part, its putting it back together. A set of those stupid flex extensions and one of those universal jointed sockets helps a lot.

I'd agree with slantzilla though, my block had a lot of staining around the driver side of the block from the exhaust. I used a feeler gauge and felt around the gasket area, come to find out some of the gasket was blown out. I didn't even hear an exhaust tick.

I'll repeat, try the VC gasket, My slant was really wet under the manifold, but after a new gasket and a clean up it was dry as can be.

I know someone who pulled the Slant out of his race car and replaced a leaking rear main that turned out to be the back end of the valve cover gasket.
