Old war horse 440 + 30 engine is out of my sons play car for a quick rings, bearings, cam swap and converter.

Engine is a LY rod 440+30 TRW's about 11:1 with max port indy sr's that flow 370 with indy 4150 intake and 1000cfm quick fuel carb.

Trans is freshly tricked 727 with new 5000 converter, old one was 3500.

I have had the engine for 20 years and cant remember the cam that's in there only that it was 600 lift ?? solid.

Years ago this engine was in my old 63 Ply on the bottle running 9.70's but now is semi retired. It ran 11.2 @ 123 first time out for the boy but came out of the hole like a slug, 1.7 60'.

I have this cam on the shelf with it's lifters. Would like your thoughts on it, keeping in mind that the young gun don't have mountains of cash.

Thanks

Good heads, lots of duration, lots of stall and decent compression. I think it will work as a drag cam. Goes without saying, the engine will need to spin pretty fast. Not sure how long the heavy pistons + LY rods will last running over 6000 RPM though.

What's wrong with the .600 solid that's in it now?

I would like to take more advantage of the heads and go with a 1.6 rocker. But like it was mentioned, the rods and pistons are going to be the weak link.

The poor thing was @ 7200 through the stripe when I had it smile

Hate to say this but 7 pistons are TRW and one is a Manley that was almost the same smile just a slight difference on the top that I rectified with a die grinder. What can I say I had 3 days to get it back on the track and no money smile

iagree up I would install it at 102 to 105 intake lobe center and look around for a set of 1.6 ratio rockers later thumbs

Al ,
if the old cam had more lift I imagine it may be bigger duration . However the bigger vert will help out of the hole - if it hooks up . 123mph should be well in the 10's.Why not reuse that cam ? Especially as the heads will flow with the lift .
That Reed cam looks about 1 size bigger than my Camtech , and less lift hasn't hurt it . It should be easy on the valve train though .

I would use the cam thats in it.. but I would advance
it for more torque and so it runs out of rpm sooner..
I wouldnt trust 20 year old LY rods that have been
spinning hard.. or replace the rods with some H-beams

Cheers guys, the old cam has seen better days, looks like it has started to lose the tops of the lobes, its junk.

Hey P Body, the LY rods are not 20 years old, more like 46 years old smile

THANKS

Well you got the idea about the rods... they're worn out
and waiting to break.... too bad about the cam... I guess
that settled the question
