Hi All, I am installing new wheel cylinders, lines and brake hoses on a 63 Plymouth Savoy and the new front hoses did not come with the copper crush washers?
Are washers used on drum brake assemblies where the flexible line screws into the wheel cylinders? Or is this only when screwing the line into a disc brake caliper?

Seals the same way the hard line in the back does, via the flare fitting in the WC.

So no washer used! Trying to avoid any leaks when pressurized. Have a buddy who insists that it will leak without a washer. Factory service manual does not show or mention a crush washer. The flair must do the majority of sealing in all applications I would think.

The flare does all the sealing, if it leaks it's an issue with the flare or the seat it seals on.

Gang, some of these cylinders seal with a washer, I have seen them both ways. Auto zone, NAPA have them, cheap. Good luck!

Some hoses have both a flare and a flange for a washer. If the hose screws in and stops before the flange area, its flare seal. If the hose goes all the way on and stops at the flange, it needs a washer.

Not all hoses have both. If I knew how to post pics here I could show this.

I installed my wheel cylinders around 2005 when I rebuilt the front end of my 63. Its been a long time ago but I thought my front brake lines used the copper washers. But it was many years ago when I replaced them. Ron

So if the hose tightens against the wheel cylinder it needs a washer? I may just buy some washers and if needed install them.Hard to get a clear answer on this one.

The washers are cheap. If you don't need them you can return them or throw them in a drawer for the next time you work on something that needs them. It would suck to be ready to put the brakes together but can't because you needed the washers but didn't get them. Get the washers. Gene

copper washers are good to have on hand, but be aware there are differences in the quality. some are very hard and don't crush properly for a good seal, and some are thinner than needed for a proper seal when thickness really matters. this is especially important in disc caliper hose connections. just be aware.

To answer, yes, if the flange part of the hose contacts the cylinder you will need a washer. If tapered seal, flange will be a good 1/8 inch away or so. Good luck.
