Is it going to last longer than the 2yr old Eaton trutrac, that did it's best cone type impersonation, grinding itself to death to the point I had to beat an axle out of it ?

I have been running one now for 5 years and have had no problems to speak of, granted, the miles are limited.


It really doesn't matter whether you win or lose…

oh damn. how much power were you running through the trutrac and were you running it with sticky tires?
i was thinking about getting one...

maybe that sways me towards a clutch diff or detroit locker

I have been using mine on the street for about 12 years no issues whatsoever.

I have both, I like the Detroit better. Truetrac feels weird coming out of the burnout box and the Detroit has acceptable street manners. I've only been running them for about 2 or so years, so I can't really speak to the longevity.

I have not run one in a car, but have driven several long-term in 4x4 trucks. No complaints, most were lighter duty rigs but we never broke one. Not saying it isn't possible but I haven't heard many stories of failing them.

They will chirp the tires if you apply throttle in a turn, and you occasionally will get clunks too.

I absolutely hate my locker. Shoves the front end so hard it feels like its about to break something. I run a 295/65 drag radial so that could be some of the problem. It makes a lot of banging and cracking noises too. Just not too street friendly in my opinion.

You can get lighter springs for them, to allow them to unlock and ratchet easier, from this guy:

We had one in an old style Bronco. Horrible on the street, can't imagine a spool being much worse. Tires fighting and barking to get around a corner... Just too aggressive for my taste. Fantastic in the dirt, and I suppose at the track

Sounds like you may as well use a spool as already mentioned. I ran a spool for many many years on the street. I now have a stock posi and love it on the street but wouldn't trust it at a track.

As I recall theres a technique to driving one especially making a rt hand turn. I was never good at it but it wasn't my vehicle. (Dads) Either come off the power before the wheels are turned and coast through it, or if you had to stop, stay back and release the brake and let the vehicle build a little momentum straight and not touch the gas until part way through the turn. The trick was to either unlock it by removing power or not applying power until it was turned. If it was under power going around the corner it would fight. I suppose a stick would be easier to manage than an automatic. The Bronco was auto.

Just put a spool in it. I have driven a car with a spool or back in the old days welded spider gears for 1000's of miles on the street and never had any issue rain or shine.

I run one in my stick shift Cuda. I never had any issues cornering. Only thing is shifting under power gives you a little "wiggle" due to unloading and loading quickly. Made me nervous at first but I've gotten used to it. :-)

I have three in use and a forth that will be used.
No tire may turn slower than the ring gear... So in a left hand turn the right tire unlocks and travels faster, right hand turn left unlocks and travels faster. This means the inside tire is the driving wheel if you coast or light throttle through a corner a Detroit can be near transparent. If you tight corner and or heavy throttle they will push the vehichles front tires to degree likely way worse with skinniest up front. To say they are unstreetable is akin to calling drag week fastest cars unstreetable. They have their quirks but a DRIVER will adapt. They are near indetructsble and they are legendary for a reason.
My vote for perfect street diff electronic selectable limited slip while off and spool when activated. Ected by Detroit/Eaton

Been running my Detroit Locker for over 6 years now and 99% of the time I dont even realize it is a locker. I dont know what causes the problems some say they have but mine has never given me any problems at all and I have driven it in the rain with my Hoosier radial slicks 3 times now and it handles great on turns. How can it not as it unlocks one wheel as soon as I start turning and most of the time I cant feel it when it locks back up after going straight again. Course I drive it easy when I get caught in the rain but I know mine is way better then a spool would be in a turn. I dont hammer it when in turns either as I would think most also dont lay into their cars in a turn. Honestly I love it in my street/strip car and I can hardly ever even tell it has a locker in when driving it. Ron

Friends car that I am the crew of ... 2012 Mustang V6 that he races in a 12.5 index class ... slicks, 5 speed and 75HP shot of giggle gas, he launches it at somewhere around 4k rpm. It's his daily driver so he puts many thousands of street miles on it yearly.

It has stock C clip axles and the side gears are thrust into the center of the unit, the gears are harder than the carrier and there is no thrust washer of any kind in between them. The drivers side was worse than the pass side , it raised a burr on both sides but it was so big on the left that it stopped the clipped end on of the axle from being slid in far enough to get it out. it too a combination of a chisel, a dremel with stones and steel cutters, and finally hammering the axle in both directions till I was able to get the clip out.

I did a little research before recommending he go this route, but obviously not enough as I have since found info on line showing this exact issue back as far as 2011, and earlier with the 2 worm gear design.

I wanted something that was not going to require yearly, or bi yearly rebuilds and since he drives it year round, including in the snow, a spool was not an option.
