i live in SW FL.high humidity and heat,i love it,but my tires dont.is there any way to prevent or slow down the cracking of the side walls other than removing the wheels and storing them inside?

A lot of the Rv'ers use wheel (tire) covers.

I live in Australia, it is hot, the tires on my trailer ( 195/70/14 light truck ) have been on it for 6 years and are fine. Not sure how yours have turned to sh1t ? what are they and how old ?

i thought about those ,but would like to know if they really work.my tires semm to crack on the trailer side as well witch is under the fender and not exposed to sun lite.ive tried different tires and the Maxis seem to last the longest.im wonder if some kind of coating along with the covers would work.

i wonder if living 1/4 mile from the coast has anything to do with it.

depending on the tire 4-6 years.i got a daily driver car that took me 6 years to put 60 k mi. on it ,the tires were wore out but no cracking.they were just a generic ching chong ding dong tire.mabey the fact that they dont get used much has somthing to do with it

I have come to the realization that I need to change tires on the trailer every 3 years no matter how many miles are on them. I think it has a lot to do with the damage to the tires when we back these trailers up and from not using the trailer year around to help keep them pliable if that makes sense.

i think use has got to have somthing to do with it.for example,i have two sling shots.both have surgical tubing,the one that gets used is in great shape.the one that hangs on the wall is rotting.

I use covers in the winter , but I also put sun block on them and it works great

It is likely worse here in the desert. I am lucky to get two years out of a set of tires. Ozone is THE main killer of rubber in tires. Direct exposure to the sun or parking on dirt(absorbs ozone) are the absolute two worst things you can do to tires. Well except storing them next to your home furnace.

Most of us are hauling over-loaded trailers and sometimes at high speeds. Tire pressure is often over-looked and are on the low side. Ask any full time RV oldtimer and if the tire calls for 70 pounds they pump them up to 80 but they also buy the highest ply tire they can. my 24 foot trailer was made in the 90's and I hope to buy a 26 footer with 16 inch tires this year or over the Winter next year. I have a guy begging for mine right now at 4000 dollar.

My experience is that it is not your weather, it is your tires. Standard 15 inch trailer tires are JUNK. I converted my last trailer to 16 inch, 10 ply light truck tires and never looked back, two years parked outside and no problems. Tire shop got me a size that was only 1/2 inch taller than my regular 15 tires, so all I had to do was buy rims.
With 15 inch trailer tires I used to blow out on average at least two a summer. Had damage to trailer, and changing trailer tires on the interstate is much more dangerous than drag racing.
Bought a new trailer this year and 16 inch tires were an option, so I got them on it as well.

I'm in the every three year camp. Just too dangerous on the freeway and tears up the trailer. The 16 inch, load range e tires that systematically blew, had less than 3,000 miles on them, but were 7 years old. They also sat outside on the ground, so the ozone theory very well might apply. (I need to get some pavers for the tires to sit on). The oem replacement rule of thumb, is 6 years.

The light truck tires are NOT LEGAL in most states. There are many states that it is the law that the tire has to be marked "Trailer Tire". I'm sure if I had 15" light truck tires they may last longer too but they are not legal for me.

I changed over to 16" tires this last fall, had to cut the inner wheel box and raise it a 1" plus cut out the outer trailer body to fit the larger size. Cutting the outside was easy, the inside required removal of the plywood inside covering and cutting the wheel box, welding in a spacer pieces , cutting the plywood to refit. Hopefully this will take care of the 15" blow out tire blues.
