Bought a thermoquad that runs well once off the idle circuit. Will not idle well(like a big vacuum leak).Don't care to mess with it so who would you send one to to have looked at.Only interested in knowing what the problem is and how much to fix(if fixable). Then I will decide if I want to spend MORE money on it.
The motor it was intended for has a carb now.I could use it on a smogger 440 if it does not become cost prohibitive.

Thanks and yes I know I am lazy.

You might take out the idle mixture screws and shoot a healthy 3 second blast of starting fluid or brake kleen into each port then replace the screws. First counting the # of turns CW in to lightly seated before removing them will let you do this (effective in alot of cases) test in 2 minutes cuz you can quickly return them to their original position(s). the idle circuits are the smallest passages in the carb & dirt in the fuel will make that system act up the quickest

Some of those quads had a altitude compensator or something along those lines, it's kind of a small port that opens to let more air in. Maybe someone can further add to this?

My bet is that where the throttle shafts pass through the carb base is wore out, and that is your vacuum leak. I've heard of that area being repaired, but have never done it. Back in the day, we just tried a different carb base. Probably one of the reasons everything i have it efi now. Gene

Check to make sure the rear of the gasket carb to manifold goes all the way to the back of the carb. Some are too short and will create a huge leak. If your using a spread bore adapter make sure that it covers the rear base of the carb as well.
