Does the 340 use the solenoid also? I could understand the purpose of one on an air conditioned car but why do these cars need one and what triggers it? thank you

You need to be more specific (year, etc.) but yes, a 340 used one as well, the 1970 340 six pack & 440 six pack (and 70-71 Hemi) used the same solenoid as the 1971 340 4 barrel (DR1114429). PROPER reproductions are not being made and originals are rare/expensive accordingly ($350-$500.00 used).

They have nothing to do with A/C, it's basically a shut off switch to keep the engine from dieseling after you shut it off, it's energized by a single 12v wire off of your engine wire harness.

and with todays pump gas it's a non problem (at least for me)

As Scott has pointed out you need to watch what you buy some repops are sub-par on the internals.. I remember Scott actually posted the difference on the working internals a few years ago you may want to find that thread...
I've found some repops don't have enough activation power or assembly tolerances to set the solenoid at the same value each time resulting in a wandering idle...Others have a short lifespan so choose wisely..

Idle is set by the solenoid when activated,as the key is shut off it deactivates then closes the carb's throttle blades almost completely...

On a side note technically you're supposed to activate the solenoid then depress the pedal to let the solenoid set properly then commence the starting procedure..

The repoped one should be considered decoration.

Thanks for all the replies. An "expert" in my area has probably 6 6 pack cars. He told me they were only on automatic cars which lead to my confusion. The carbs I sent Scott had the arm and adjustment screw and they were for a manual trans. Scott that will be the next issue when the carbs are done, I am sure I will be looking for assistance with that solenoid. Mine will be going on a 70 340 with a 4 speed.

Yes, your Six Pack "Expert" has it wrong, both auto and manual cars used the same one and they all had them.

The 1970 340 single 4 barrel uses a different solenoid (which is good because they are less money) shown in the second pic. But for Six Packs it's the DR1114429. The 340 Six Pack also uses the unique brackets shown here in the first pic. They are reproduced.
