I`m getting conflicting info.fro manufactures on running a melonized gear on a billet core .Some say Ok if both are new and a std pressure oil pump is used{crane the gear manufacturer} where others say no way like {comp }. Any first had experience? I`m trying to avoid using bronze.

What's wrong with bronze ???

The biggest issue with bronze is wear on the bottom of the gear. This is caused by "similar" metals wearing against each other - the bronze gear against the bronze bushing. Its very easily resolved - you get a steel Torrington washer (about.030" thick - no need for the bearing) to fit the shaft , machine and equal thickness off the bottom of the gear and install the washer between the bushing and gear. Wear problem solved.

Also, be sure to run a cam button on the front to keep cam walk to a minimum - most buttons want some movement but if you use a bearing type you can run it with zero gap. DO NOT use an aluminum button.

Had the wear issues stated here but the bushing in the block was badly worn when I found out so I added a 3-piece torrington set up and machined the diff and it`s good to go...........

I just pulled my motor apart to freshen it, and the bronze gear shows absolutely no wear, either on the teeth or the bottom side of the gear, I did have the nylon button at first, it failed and I installed the steel roller button a fee months ago. My block just had the stock bronze bushing in it for the shaft to slide thru.
I have had the engine in the car since 2007, have probably close to 10,000 miles in that time, I plan to re-use the gear even though I do have a spare already, as I plan to try Drag Week.

I went with the bronze gear on my small block build. Milodon at first but it had runout issues so I have MP now. I'm planning on running a .015" hardened steel shim between the gear and bushing. Don't think I'll even cut the gear.

In my case I think it was possibly from using a rubber collar w/load on the gear............ shruggy

You probably don't have to worry about .015" BUT the point of machining the thickness out is to ensure that the clearance is still there between the dist shaft and gear but that's easily checked. You don't want pressure on the gear and bushing or you're going to have wear for sure.

The dist shaft holds it down so there is plenty of
clearance... I put a collar on the dist shaft and
keep it at .010 or so after I tighten down the hold
down... do the same with a hardened washer.. this also
minimizes the timing movement
