B1 heads on a 1977 (440) block would not be something I would do on anything I planned on racing often.

1970 Duster
Edelbrock headed 408
5.984@112.52
422 Indy headed small block
5.982@112.56 mph
9.38@138.67

Hope there was a diaper, for both, you and the engine!
Looked at it again and it looks like a mechanical monster vomiting.

Hey Chip

Stock crank and main caps on a 700 hp piece? Plus nitrous? You, yourself, magged my crank at the 600 hp level and said it looked like cracked crystal. And you have to know that the main caps won't live at that power level with spray. Don't you think a set of aluminum caps should be added? We've all seen pics of those #4 caps.

Yep, it will be tough on it I'm sure, but it's gonna happen. Some people have luck with them living...guess we'll see how this one does.

Answer: They wont hurt at any level.
The question should be, how much power can a bb make without a girdle?
Mine made around 1100hp with modified factory caps and a modified factory crank. No girdle. That engine was a 400 based 470 with turbos. There was a challenger with a procharged 383 making about 1200 with a factory block running around back then also. I can't speak for his internals, cause I simply don't know.
If I weren't so cheap, I would have put a girdle on mine. Here's what it takes to hold up to that power.... (yeah it's ghetto)

I like this idea and was wondering if it could work on an 8 3/4 dr. side kinda like a billet cap............ work

If you aint making enough power to destroy a stock block you are doing it wrong stirthepot

Obviously I`m not.............Based on some opinions here, I`m probably in the 550 hp range so we`re good for a while.......... beer

I think its more like... You're doing something wrong if you're breaking stock blocks at that power level.
I don't deny that given the choice, I would use a "race built block". But then you're using all good internals. Beyond reach for many. The more serious guys on here traveling cross country, with a lot invested in the entire race "infrastructure" would be foolish to use old factory stuff. I totally agree, buuuttttt.... there is a lot to be said for the nobody that can rip off somewhat serious ETs with absolute junk under the hood.
We all play with what we can afford. The so called "bandaids" (don't we all buy and use bandaids? When did they become a bad thing?)help the low budget guys with some ingenuity hang with those better funded. To me, that is satisfying.

It was not the Hp as much as the added HP from the blue bottle that did that one in. Even moreso the detonation combined with the very large amount of stuff added to it. Was doomed from day 1, but as you say ran what he could afford smile

Al, that picture would have been more honest with the last description attached!
I also would suggest that there are better ways to remove the transmission.

I know a guy that blew up a B motor like that, there was just enough left of the block to support the heads and intake. Even broke the cam out of the block!

Have a great day
