Just getting around to swapping my 360 into my 87 D150 and found out the trans is a 904.I didn't think they put them in full size pickups?Has anyone seen this before?1987 D150 318 2bbl 2wd with an 8.25 rear end.

I know this could have been swapped.I am disappointed as we are ready to drop it in and my 727 stall converter isn't going to work. mad

Some of the light duty Dodge pickups were very light duty! I'm surprised it was a D150 instead of a D100, but maybe the D100 went away by the mid 80s. Gas mileage was more of a concern then hauling stuff was. That 904 probably is a lockup trans as well!

You might be surprised how well that 904 will hold up (and how well it will respond) to the 360. It will be a toss up if the 904 trans or the 8 1/4 is the weak link. Actual traction can kill either one pretty quickly. Gene

I built a pretty stout 360 backed by a 904 with transgo kit in our 84 D150 with 8.25 and never had any issues....fun little truck....i'd grab a converter and go with it !!!!!

I am guessing it is a lockup model as well.I will probably put the stock converter back in and see if it holds up before I put a converter in it.

Think I will get rid of the 2.71 peg leg before I worry about a converter.

The high rear gear ratio was there for MPG, then you needed the low 1st and 2nd ratios to get it moving with the high gear. I have only seen the 904 and 2something gear ratios used together. Those trucks were not the 400hp and 10,000 lb behemoths we drive now days and with 200hp they would last forever (well almost). They were not desighned to get you anywhere in a hurry but carry a common size load cheaply and efficently. People back then normally used them to haul out the trash, get a few hay bails for the goats once in a while... now days people need a 3/4 ton truck to haul the fat butts around every day in luxury after pigging out at [censored] king.

Its probably using the two words in combination. You can talk about a burger or two all day long, and you can talk about a king or two all day long, but put the two together and your advertising, or slandering, depending on the words you use, I suspect. Gene
