Found a nice pair of bare 915 HP heads. Just surface rust. I am dropping them off at the head shop. What should I tell him I want as far as type of valve, guides, seats, etc. This guy is good and knows his stuff, but he always tries to cut corners. Want these done once and done right.
Grandma always said I had "hands of gold"!

tell him to use them as door stops...
buy a set of stealth aluminum heads from 440source.com....or even edelbrock rpms...
by the time you replace the valves..guides ...spring and retainers and pay for the machine work.....you will spend enough to buy the stealth heads at $899.

Tell him to install 11/32 solid bronze guides. Then have him install exhaust seats. BUT MAKE SURE he understands not cut the seats too deep. About .250 max. Some shops don't know that you can cut down the seat that is not needed. Then buy some cheap 2.14 1.81 (depending on the engine you want to use heads on) stainless valves . If they know anything about Mopar heads have him do some minor port work. You will have a nice set of heads . I am working on a set 915 for myself. BTW I just worked on a set of stealth heads. They are not ready to run out of the box. They are still a great value and we should all be greatful that we have them as an option. But the valve job and guides need to be looked at very closely. Hope this helps. The reason that shops try to cut corners is because of sticker shock, they know you will be told to just buy new heads.

What about the guys like me that need to run OEM cast iron heads due to rules? I'd love to run a set of aluminium heads, but in truck pulling they don't like the aluminium heads.

Kind of contadictory don't you think? If he always tries to cut corners he is neither good nor knows his stuff. If you want them done right send them elsewhere.Look into a set of hughes pro pocket heads. They are for sale on their website.May not be 915's but you can angle mill them to get the desired cc and quench.

(quote) If your budget can handle the extra bucks, go the stealth route. Maybe just clean up the 915s and then sell them. The "not even close pal" guy would probably jump all over them !!
And he can set his own price to buy them, since he is the original poster and ALLREADY OWNS THE HEADS!!!

There ia a set of 915 listed in race parts that looks to be one hell of a deal! Not defending the machine shop but that just the way it is. Also what could be more stealth than a set of factory iron heads that flow around 280???

I saw those & was tempted to call the guy & get the details. Might be a very good deal for $400 but then there's the shipping factor which always seems to queer any good deal you run into on the heavy stuff.

Ask them to ship them ups. But not a ups store. Should be around 45 bucks. If the heads are what he says, they are the best you can get with factory castings. If I had some spare money I would be on them like a cheap suit.

Lets say he checks for cracks, cleans heads, mills surface, machines for oversize valves, new valves, hardened exh seats, new bronze guides, new springs retainers and keepers- so far what $600-$700 for a set of heads that flow 210-220cfm??? Now have them ported by a mopar guy to get good usable flow (260-280cfm) whats that gonna cost another $700? I do not know exact prices but the Source heads or Edelbrock are a win win smart way to go. If machine shop and porting prices were now what they were 25 years ago Id say have the 915s done up.
Keep old mopars alive.
